I know opinions on which exhaust sounds 'best' are pretty subjective (well, actually 100% subjective).. but I thought I'd throw out my wishes for my project's sound, and see what you guys think..

A brief bit of background- my 2000 VFR lump now lives in a little British car (1959 Berkeley), so I get to do some odd things when it comes to the tune/exhaust.. It will be a "Jeckle and Hyde" affair, as it will utilize 2 separate, switchable tunes through a Power Commander V..

Tune #1 will be rude, ragged, and raw.. the exhaust will have a manual 'dump' at the base of my custom header to allow for a "wide open" exhaust.. this is 'hate your neighbor, Look At Me!! territory, with no attempt at all to tame the sweet VFR sound- louder is better, and the fuel map will be made to run rich to match the free-flowing setup..

Tune #2 is where I need your 5th-gen insight.. This setup needs to be tame and respectable.. the fuel map will be curved for economy and 'normal' daily driving.. I want the exhaust sound to be reasonable, throaty, and not obnoxious (but I don't want the whisper-quiet sound of the stock can either)..

So, any thoughts for a slip on? I will not be running a cat, and the header will be a custom design with 28" long primary tubes to the collector (just as Honda designed for torque).. In my quest for a slip on, smaller and lighter are better, and I'm not looking to spend big bucks (I don't need the latest and greatest for this)..

Any exhaust/muffler ideas that will help me get the 'mild-but-not-stock' sound I'm after?

    Thanks-

With your obvious fabrication skills (skillz? you are the same guy who did the VFR800-Honda 600 mash-up, right?) I'd think any and all possibilities are open to you.

Because you could fab up just about anything into your solution you could go with either something OEM that was removed from a late-model bike (pre-Catalytic Converter), or go with an aftermarket slip-on type. I'd just search Ebay for what's available (either OEM or aftermarket) and then search for the video clips that people always post of their bikes to narrow down what's acceptable to you.

Either way if the exhaust canister is going to be hidden underneath the vehicle you don't necessarily have to worry about its cosmetic appearance. This means you could probably get some smokin' hot Ebay deals on good quality but road-rashed canisters (either OEM or aftermarket).

I don't know if you have any experience with re-pack-able aftermarket slip-on exhaust canisters, but you can fine-tune their sound by re-packing them either tighter or looser. Tighter packing puts more noise out the back end, looser packing puts out less noise. Of course, the packing will age as time goes on which will also changes the tone.

And, yes, I'm looking forward to seeing pictures.

Edit: Okay, I went to your Locostusa thread, love the way the engine looks sitting inside the Berkeley shell.

Sorry guys, I should have included links/pics in the O.P...

..off the beaten path; a different (and addictive!) way to enjoy that sweet little 5th gen motor..

I like the idea off packing a muffler to suit what I'm after .. honestly didn't occur to me to 'tune' one that way- duh! On the Honda I ran a shorty Supertrapp, which gave a different method (plus/minus discs) of achieving the same tuneable result..

Seems I'm not doing so well trying to post pics/links here ... I think it mostly worked...

Forgot to mention that the muffler of choice will in fact be seen (so I'll need a 'pretty' one), as there's no room to tuck it under the car.. it will simply dump toward the ground, under the engine, and in front of the firewall (which by the way is how the Berkeley company did it back in 1959... these Berks are wacky little cars :Car:

I have a Two Brothers racing exhaust on my 99 VFR. It was too loud for me, so I built a rear baffle for the exhaust. A real easy thing to build with just hand tools and a pop riveter. Bike sounds much better and at highway speeds you can't hear the exhaust. I'm getting a stock exhaust for the bike as I don't like loud exhaust. Too tiring.

Thanks for the feedback guys.. I was able to pick up a pair of Leo Vince silencers on CL... I’ll fab one in and see if I like the sound..
