They don't make them in the correct rear size, 180-55/17.

This is an open ended question. To answer this properly, one would need to know what you are looking for in a tire. Longevity, grip, cost, availability, etc. Just about any Sport-Touring tire would be a good place to start, Good grip and good mileage. Sport tires better grip but less mileage.

All the well known brands have tires in both categories and even some lesser known brands as well. I’ve been running Michelin tires on my 6 Gen, currently the Road 5 front and rear (Previously Pilot Road 4 or 2 rear with Pilot Power 3 front) and the Pilot RS on my 5 Gen, which has been exclusively track ridden for the last 1100+ miles. So far happy with the performance of bothe bikes. Mileage with good performance out of my 6 Gen and great performance but limited miles on my 5 Gen.

There are so many options and opinions on tires that it will make your head spin but you can almost not go wrong with most tires these days. Bridgestone, Dunlop, Michelin, Pirelli even Shinko offer up good tires for a good price, just need to know what the criteria to use when choosing them.

Why? I have a set of roadsmart 3 on right now (2000 miles) and I have been very pleased with them. I have pushed them very very hard this year never a issue with traction.

I agree with 'why?'. I run Q3s, and Q3+s on various bikes, street and track. Nothing wrong with them. The Roadsmart and Roadsmart IIs were not that great, I'll admit (yes I've used them). I've run Michelin track tires, they are good tires. I run Dunlop track tires, also good tires, and lower cost.

As has been stated, you have a wide range of good options, you'll have to define your specific needs, then pick the tire that meets those needs .

I have also run Dunlop 1&2 before not great tires, though have had worse, the 3 are better, took a chance on them and I am pretty happy. No wet rides so far with them, but I have beat the crap out of them. From high speed mountain runs (75-90mph) to 90-100mph runs down the highway for about an hour in 80-90 degree (f) heat no issues still look good life left after 2000 miles of that

I have a set on now of 3's as well. They are better than those in the past with other bikes, lighter (2003 Sv1000s) and heavier (1995 Gpz1100) I guess I just don't trust them with multiple sets having cupping issues and getting a wobble in the front end at high speeds. It may be me, the bike or just I don't care to put any more money Dunlop's way. I will be putting on a set of Evo 30s on in a few weeks. Tires are always a matter of an individual preference. Also the mileage on them for me has been really poor.

I have had the same issues with a lot of tires including pilot road 4s now that I have DMr suspension all the way round and getting it tuned for myself the cupping is not a issue anymore.(so far) time will tell I suppose

What is your riding style, and are you looking for grip or longevity?

I've got the OEM Dunlops on right now, but will be going with Metzler M7RRs next spring. I want more grip than miles out of them, but they appear to be a decent compromise between the two. I'd expect maybe 6,000 miles out of them, and if it works out that way, I'll be happy. I'm not an extremely fast rider, but I like knowing the grip is there when I go back road hunting on the weekends. I don't often ride in the wet either, so wet grip is not a priority for me.

If you want more mileage, Angel GTs offer good grip and hold up well over time. Pretty much any of the sport touring tires will handle more miles and still be grippy enough for sporty rides.

    M7RR. Sports bike tyres.
Tbh I would be doubtful if you ever out exceeded the grip on the angel gt’s out on the open road

I have found the limit of the Angel GTs on my FZ1, and the tire profile was odd to me. Too flat in the middle, and fall off sharply to the edges.

I've also found the VFRs stock Dunlops are very pressure sensitive. If you run 36/42 as recommended, you get good life but the grip is less than stellar. If I drop the front and back about 4 lbs each, the grip is much better. Only issue there is squaring the back tire off quickly at the lower pressures.

What I want is that middle ground between a sport touring tire and a sport tire. Not much out there, but I think the M7RRs are about the best compromise from the research I've done. Won't know for sure till I try them, but I'm looking forward to it.

Sounds like a squared off tyre.
OE Dunlop’s I thought we’re crap, got rid of them as soon as I could.

M7rr are a sports tyre as far as I’m aware.

Yes, the M7RR is classified as a sport tire. To find the middle ground I'm looking for means either finding a long lasting sport tire, or a very sporty sport touring tire. As stated, I'm not a fan of the profile of the Angel GT (even when new). There are not so many options out there that fit the bill. As long as I can get 4-5k out of the tires with the profile not squaring off badly, I'll be happy. I don't commute or ride highways much, so we'll see how they do over time.

Are you sure your suspension is set up right for you? And tire pressures maintained? Could be the source of your cupping issues.
