Did I see somewhere you were also looking for the Owner's Manual? I think that is also available as a download somewhere on that site as well. If not, send me a PM and I can see if I can find it on my computer and burn you a copy. I am sure I have it saved somewhere on my desk top computer. No cost. Pay it forward when you can.

With valves there will be some indications from the engine when it is time to check them. One is excessive noise and the other is hard starting when hot.

With the tank lifted so you can get at the upper part of the engine, you can use a stethoscope to listen to the valve train, or use a long screwdriver up against the valve cover and the handle end at your ear, or likley even a piece of hose. That will tell you if you have any strange noises on the top end.

I would think it would be worth while at some time to check the valves, just for peace of mind. I'm in that boat with my 99 VFR with 40 thousand miles and I have no previous history to go by. Bike runs good, no noises etc and somebody has replaced the spark plugs so it has received some TLC during its life.

I'm not a real fan of K&N air filters. I won't get into a war over their filtering abilities, lots of good technical info on this around the web, but one consequence I've found when using an oiled filter is that it gums up the throttle plates. If you take the filter out and look down into the throats of the injectors you'll see a buildup of oil crud. That isn't there with a stock filter.

Probably most likely true about hard starting when hot, but noisy valves...not so much. With older cam followers that had screw-type adjustment, that could very well be true as parts wore a bit and clearances opened up. But for engines with the cams running directly on the valve buckets you don't get wear in the same way. Instead you're more likely to have the valve start to seat further into the head and clearances will most likely decrease. At least that has been my experience with cam-over-buckets type of engine.

    JMO of course.

Good to know as most of my experience is with the BMW & old gold wing world, both having screw adjusters. The exhausts in those tend to close more than the intake due to the heat. The closing up makes for the hard starting when hot.
