In Manhattan, Brooklyn, bike lanes are pretty clean, just the potholes and double parked cars in the bike lanes that you need to avoid.
Even with my 16" wheel commuter folding bike I'm speeding away from cars most of the time in traffic, especially when cars are stuck waiting for the light to change, getting across intersections at walking pace is sometimes safer than sitting still for cars to run you over when light changes.

In the rural area where I live on weekends, there are no bike lanes.
I ride about 1500-2000 miles annually on my road bike, I get about 2-3 flats annually, usually from thorns, glass shards, nails that I pick up on the ride and fix roadside.

To be fair, it's one of those "compromise" things.

Here in Canberra, the city is very much a "planned" thing. The intent was - from the start - to have (originally) pedestrian paths as far separated from horse and buggy-carrying (later vehicle) roadways, as possible. Eventually, as bikes became more popular, the use of these paths became a shared one.

The compromise is either ride on the roads (and take the ever-increasing risk of being knocked off), or run the puncture risk by taking the bike paths which - as you say - are not swept of gravel, leaf debris and what not.

To the previous poster...yes, I've done the "run your fingers throughout the tyre to check for embedded cr*p" etc.

I figure that in my case, I'll do the following:

    1) Re-line the tyres with the actual inner tyre liners I'm running, PLUS some cut up inner tubes* (can't hurt, right?), and

    2) Stick to the bike paths, and accept the heightened puncture risk, as a trade-off against the significantly lessened "other" risks of not taking them.

    * Just on the subject of lining them with paper money...Pffft! Who the hell uses cash these days? Can I line them with a contact-less payment app? ;)

I second the use of Talc/Baby powder on the tube and inside of the tire to reduce the risk of pinch flats.

This is about as close as you can get before flashing lights come after you.
After 9/11 there was an ARMY attack heli parked on the lawn:

Very nice birthday present. Should provide many years of fun! Don't have to worry about it not having a liter engine either....

H0w things change after time. Two years after posting this I went out and bought one of the speedo - odometers with the magnet on the spokes of the wheels and just love it. I actually have used the speedo when some old bitch was complaining about my speed on a very wide and very improved trail. I was doing 17kmh at the time she started barking. I suggested to her walking companions, who said nothing in support of her growling, that they really should lead their pet with a muzzle as well as a leash, then kept on riding at my leisure.

    Carry on.

Maybe a shock collar too. Might reduce or even stop the barking. Very annoying.

Bought this for less than $450 delivered to my driveway.
Looking forward to putting it to work in NYC metro, maybe fit an electric motor when I wear out the rear wheel.

I have been riding my sons Canondale Mountain bike, now I want a new 29" MT bike. My old 26" Canondale Super V 500 is very nimble on tight trails but the 29" just rolls over everything so much easier.

All my MTBs are still 26" wheels.

I've tried 29er MTB a few times, they seem heavy & sluggish to me; so I kept my MTBs as 26".

I don't ride as much MTB as I used to now, with trail access just 1/2 from my driveway, I rarely drive my MTB to any other trails.

I think most if not all of my MTBs have been outdated, I still have good amount of spare tires/tubes/wheels/parts that likely I won't be updating my MTBs to 29er.

60F today, unfortunately have to be in the office.. wishing for saddle time.

29" bikes weigh as much or less than older 26" bikes. Most are not as nimble but some are right there with the 26ers. Its a balance of rake and trail of the forks. More aggressive and they are pretty nimble, that overcomes the usually longer wheel base. But 29" eat up terrain variances much better. BUT I'm not running out and buying a $2k MT bike! lol

My sis-in-law made few masks for me, enough to rotate through weekly wash cycle; not medical grade but sure keeps me from touching my face while going outside.
Got 4 rides in so far this week, nearly 100 mi. in the saddle.
Will see how crowded the roads are this weekend, maybe safer to stay indoors.

Yes. I rode my Trek Carbon yesterday on a perfect day from a weather point of view. There is nothing to compare in riding a good bicycle to riding a motorcycle. Two completely different experiences.
