Went for a ride up towards the Rock Store, a lot of devastation. Mixture for burned hillsides mixed with green from a week of rain. Saw a lot of burned structures and road closures everywhere.
The cafe on Kanan and troutdale is gone.
Felt good to get a ride in on a Sunday which I never have off.

Today I 3M'd the front lower fairings and the black cowl in front of the exhaust. Stop any potential stone damage etc.

Glued back the left heated grip, but it seems like the included superglue from the grips is horrible quality.

    Interesting.

From the photo, it appears to have through-bolts for length adjustments. Certainly a more reliable setup than the strippable threads which were the weak point of the junk unit which it replaces. Suggestion: use Loctite on hardware which could come loose and cause another tip-over. Suggestion #2: Ride!

Good idea. Good idea #2 also. I did go to the grocery store today but too cold to go to far still. 40 degrees for a high today.

Yesterday I removed and cleaned the Jama Laser exhaust with some Harpic Power Plus Max 10 toilet cleaner.

They look shiny again! :D 14 years of crud, roadgrime and dirt just removed in the blink of an eye (well yeah, the toilet cleaner did).
To get the best result I removed the exhaust from the bike, but the clamp was rusted shut and no amount of heat or penetrating fluid could take the rusted nut 'n bolt off the clamp, so out comes the angle grinder.
Replaced it afterwards with a stainless nut and bolt, so hopefully I don't need to take the angle grinder out again.

That was January 5th. I'm hopeful that I'll be able to ride in February if we can get a thaw.

But, for today I pulled her out to take a compairison photo.

I bit the bullet and cut into my fairings for some frame sliders today. Locating the holes properly was a bit hard. These are R&G sliders. The fit on the left side is a bit off too. It sticks out more that it should on the left. I could probably fix by cutting the spacer that goes behind a little shorter. Other than that, the quality seems pretty good.

I have to cut holes in my fairings too to accept the crashbars. Did you use a holesaw and if so, how did you locate the holes? I'm a little bit nervous to make a hole in a spotless fairing.

I had some problems there to be honest. The instructions said to back out the oem bolts and put paint on the end but I found they weren't long enough to hit the fairing. So I put a punch in the hole and used that but it didn't work completely. It was off a bit and I had to use a file. In short, it is a hack job on my part but fortunately the slider mostly covers it up.

The easiest way is to take the fairing off, and take a laser pointer mounted on a tripod, set the tripod about 5'-6' away from the bike, to give yourself room to work, aim the laser pointer directly on the center of the bolt, the one that the R&G rod replaces, DO NOT MOVE the laser pointer, the tripod, or the bike, reinstall the fairing, the laser pointer dot on the reinstalled fairing will be the exact center of the hole that needs to be cut, mark that spot on the fairing with a sharpie, remove the fairing and cut the hole, reinstall the fairing and repeat the process for the other side....the holes will be dead nuts perfect. It's actually incredibly simple and worry free.

    Sanded, primed, basecoat.
Now we still need to wait on the special midcoat that gives it the special R157 Italian Red shine.
I can't stand knowing I have scratches in my fairings where black peeks through.
    [IMG] [IMG]

And I had oversprayed the front mudguard too with primer so I sanded that one too and need to get some cutting compound and polish to get it back to the original state... This little bike is becoming a huge moneypit, but I want it perfect!

I proceeded to compound, polish and wax the front fender again because I wetsanded it the day before (I accidentally dropped primer on it)
    This is the result:

Then I couldn't find a laser level- or pointer. But I mounted the fairings loosely and it put a dab of the wrong paint on the end of the threaded rod.
Then pushed it through and it marked the inside of the fairing. Using a drillbit for wood, I made a pilot hole and then out comes the holesaw.
I don't know but the holesaw I have made the hole so perfect and didn't ruin the already ruined paintjob even more!

I also noticed I had to modify the coolant overflow tank, because there wasn't one included (It's not R&G), so out comes the jig saw and we ate a hole out of the tank.
Then patched it up with some kind of plastic and welded it to the tank with a heated screwdriver. It's water tight!
Lucky for me it doesn't even need to be water tight because it doesn't hold pressure and the welded part is above the "upper" level.

    This is how it fits:

I hope I can start tomorrow on the midcoat for the paint so that I finally can ride again! (and try out my DA polisher even more!)
