Has someone removed the breather hose from the airfilterbox. And inserted a "breather tank/oilcatcher" or just a filter?

Not on a VFR, but I've done it. There is no reason why it can't be done.

Agreed. Did it on my VF500 race bike.

I understand on some bikes getting rid of catch tanks and some extra plumbing, but the VFR goes straight from the rear valve cover to the air box. The baffling on the valve cover works good and allows plenty of volume.

Why do you want to do it on the VFR?

The reason you wouldn't want it dumping straight into the airbox, is because you don't want heated air and oil vapor hurting the performance. I also think that it's best to provide a can to allow any oil molecules in the vapor to settle out in the can, keeping the filter dry. You can just design your own catch can and have it fabricated. I just built a model out of thin cardboard, sourced the weld in bung, and the hose barbs, and had a copy of the model created out of 1/8" aluminum, then had it powdercoated.

That's pretty cool. Nice execution. How often do you check for any accumulation, at oil changes?

It has been checked a few times, there has never been a rigid schedule of checks...initially I checked it a lot, just to see what was going on and it's only had a couple very small drops come out of it, but that was better than having it in the airbox. The bike was never ran on a consistent basis, other than to get it on the dyno for a couple days and confirm that the modified engine was operating as it should, that there were no leaks anywhere, and the ignition mapping and carb tuning was completed. The machine has been retired now and is on display in my dining room. It's a pretty cool piece of industrial art.

I have been looking into doing a similar solution for the RVF400RR project I have in the works, but I'm working on a custom radiator overflow catch bottle setup right now and haven't gotten around to this part of the build yet.

Got it. Look forward to seeing some solutions on that bike.

Many thanks for all the replies, information, links and images to my question. I will make a oil catcher :)
