I've installed a set of Oxford heated grips and want to power them through a relay.

I was planning to use the licence plate light as my relay trigger but I want to ensure I tap the correct wire. There's a GREEN wire and a BROWN/BLUE wire. I believe GREEN is the ground wire so do I tap the BROWN/BLUE?

    Thanks.

Good question. There seems to be a bug in the electric scheme in the pdf service manual, since that and the rear light have both wires connected to the main earth bus. :) Green is supposed to be earth (all other earths, including R/R, are green or has green as part wire color).

Edit: there is a connector to the license light where you can measure voltage if you want to be really sure before cutting into anything.

Edit 2: or measure at the fitting for the rear light bulb, it shares earth and feed wires with the license light.

    Thanks for the replies. It’s a 2004 VFR800A-4 (non-ABS).

The reason for my question is that the wiring diagram didn’t clearly show that I could tap either of the wires, and I saw that there are other lights on those same circuits. I’d like to use a source under the seat to reduce the long-distance wiring.

I had tried earlier to connect my multimeter to the BROWN/BLUE plate light connector wire and ended up blowing the 10A fuse for the lights and instrument cluster, so I’m hesitant to probe more.

    Thanks again.

Just to close the thread, I tapped into the BROWN/BLUE licence plate light wire and the relay is working fine.

I suspect my multimeter probe contacted both terminals inside the connector when I was poking around.
