A year later and everything is still good. Mileage seems to be better. Did a 2700 mile trip last week and even with luggage and wind I was breaking 200+ miles a tank on the highway.

Very interesting write up. I'm in the middle of refreshing my own 5th gen, just pried the throttle bodies off the other day. Looking to replace the insulator boots, and found that the OEM ones are hard to come by these days (in brand new condition). Do you happen to know if the 6th gen insulators will fit? I assume from your posts that you used the 5th gen insulators with the 6th gen throttle body. I saw some aftermarket insulators for the 5th gen, but would prefer to stick with OEM for something as critical as this.

Insulators are readily available online if you are having trouble sourcing them locally - https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/motorcycle/1998/vfr800fi-a-interceptor/cylinder-head-front

#6 in the list, same part for the rear head so you can just order 4 from this link to save time. ~ $12 each

I actually tried to order through partzilla, but a couple days ago, they emailed me and told me that the insulators were no longer available. I guess it could be a goof on their end, I will call them today. The question still stands though, as I think it may be useful to the community later if/when these specialty rubber parts become hard to find.

I hope it was just a mix up on their end, let us know what you find out. My plan is probably going to be to stock up on some of these parts as they become harder to find to ensure that I have what I need in the future.

Ok, I called PartZilla. They said that the insulator boots (16211-MBG-000) was considered NLA (no longer available) by the manufacturer. They do still have two in stock, but the person on the phone said that they are highly unlikely to get any more of them. Looks like I have to go aftermarket.

Has anyone tried these aftermarket ones?

They list the 98-01 VFR in there and they are available on ebay. Same price as OEM (~$12 each). K&L says all their carb boot kits are made in Japan and meet or exceed OEM quality.

edit: I just bought the K&L ones off ebay. Should be in my hands sometime next week.

This is good to know. I wonder what the difference is between the 5th Gen insulator and the 6th? Part number is very similar, but I know the throttle body assembly is different in a few other ways. I wonder in the OD/ID is the same...

I'm thinking about buying a single 6th gen insulator and comparing them side by side with the 5th gen. Could be another easy part swap which is always welcome news to the 5th gen crowd.

On a few other bikes I've used the right diameter rad hose as an intake rubber. Works fine, and likley they are all made from a similar supply. If it is waterproof it is airproof and will certainly stand the heat.
