I have a 2007 VFR800 with 62k miles on it. I've been putting up with a VERY noisy clutch basket noise for the past 15k miles now. It only occurs when it's cold and the clutch released. Once up to full operating temp it quiets down.

This has been bugging me because I can not only hear it, I can feel it the vibration. As soon as I pull the clutch in or rev the engine passed 2k RPM it's gone. As soon as the coolant temp gets up to 172 F it's gone. I replaced the clutch plates and springs. No change.

I'm at that point where I will keep this bike for another 1-2 years and I don't want to listen to the racket any more while I'm warming up the engine. I do a lot of commuting so I spend a lot more time stopped and idling when the engine is still cold. I want to fix this!

Question: How hard is it to replace the Outer Clutch basket? Do I need a special tool like a heavy duty torque wrench? Anything I need to be aware of before I dive in? I've gone as far as removing my Throttle Body, replaced thermostat, water pump, etc. so I know my way around the engine but never had to replace something this major.

    Thanks.

Have you checked the bearing in the pressure plate?

It’s a caged ball bearing and it sounds like yours is loose when cold, Loctite bearing fit will take up any play

To answer your question, you will need a clutch holding tool and the rest is easy. Extract the clutch lifter rod, comes out by hand, unstake the washer from the mounting nut, grip the clutch center with the tool and remove the nut, el reverso to install.

try checking and refining the throttle plate synch b4 removing clutch basket. inaccurate synch will have engine running unevenly and bouncing basket back and forth.

Thank you! This is good info. Clutch Holding tool...will get this. TB sync....already done this and yes I agree out of sync TB's will make the rattle worse from erratic idle. Have to look at the ball bearings in the center of the clutch.
