    Evening all,
Just a quick introduction..... Been a Honda fan for the last 30 years and have enjoyed most of the bikes Honda had to offer in the 90s. Tried later models but just like that era to be honest. The newer stuff doesn't do it for me. However I have just picked up a 2001 VFR800Fi which I am looking forward to getting to grips with now. Standard bike, 29k on the clock. A very clean one owner machine. Very happy with this find. Hopefully be able to gleen information from other owners on the forum in the future. Thanks in advance. Tyz is my garage ornament that I have had for the last 15 years. Too many projects, not enough time! All the best.

Evening to you too and welcome to the Madhouse:Welcome:

5th Gen VFRs remain very popular, although getting parts to keep them on the road is becoming a challenge and finding a matching set of OEM fairing panels is pretty much unobtanium.

Doubtless you will find the VFR a lot heavier than a 250 TYZ Trials bike, but the VFR can cover huge mileages with ease and indeed plenty of these bikes are well onto their second lap of the speedo so a bike with just 29k is barely run in.

It is probably worth a quick browse through recent posts in the Mechanics Garage and 5th gen section on here, which will reveal these bikes are prone to charging system issues. Indeed it may be worth contacting the previous owner to see whether they have already been resolved. Sadly it is less an "if", and more a "when", the charging system will cause problems, but at least a solution is well documented on here.

    Have fun and ATGATT

    Hi SkiMad
Thanks for the welcome. Yes, a bit heavier than my trials iron but lighter than my Pan 11 or the Blackbird that I have been using for my European tours! Original owner does not recall having replaced the reg/rec so maybe that will be my first check once I get it home and serviced.
    Thanks

I'd suggest you pull apart the 3-pin connector to the reg/rect from the alternator as a preventative, these get wet and corrode due to the location (left side, behind side cover below seat) and cause initially low charging voltage but ultimately high resistance and then melting which can allow the different phases to make contact. Don't cross the streams! I chopped the connector out and soldered the wires together with heat shrink, for peace of mind.

Thanks Terry, I will give this a look at. Have been looking on the bay for replacement reg/recs but not sure of the quality of those items.?
