hi all, i have recently bought a crosstourer vfr1200x, i would of posted in that section but it is dead so with them having similar engines i thought id try get some help in here if thats ok.
anyway my engine is making a horrible sound under accelleration above 3000rpm, it sounds like one of the pistons is hitting something with every rotation or big end bearing knock ! the bike revs perfectly when stationary, it only when moving the noise starts above 3000rpm.
i have lifted the tank to see if there was something loose which there wasnt, the fuel is of good quality and new and the engine oil and filters have been changed in the last couple of days, the noise was there before any work was done to the bike.
i though maybe that the cam chain was really loose but after reading quite a bit about the vfr1200 engine and the cam chain tensioner faults it would seem mine doesnt have any of the usual tell tale signs.
my engine starts perfectly from cold with no noise whatsoever, briefly rev it to red line and it sound perfect, its only when riding and above 3000rpm !
does anyone have a idea what it could be ?

Another Cam Chain Tensioner thing? - Any way to record the noise?

If it only emits the sound when moving, I would also be looking at other things that are moving when the bike moves, but don't move when in neutral.

VFR1200’s had a problem with shaft drives, I would Google the problem, I think it was a universal joint inside the housing, whole unit had to be replaced. There was a recall, yours may qualify.

    Did you buy it new?

thanks guys , i phoned honda a few days ago about the drive shaft recall which they said was done 2 years after its production so that was 2016.
i will try to record the noise either later today or tomorrow, but its going to be tricky with only a phone and no phone holder.
i bought the bike only a few weeks ago from a honda dealership but its 200 mile from where i live so taking it back for them to check it over is quite a 400 mile round trip hike.

i have just taken the bike to a motorcycle mechanics shop who went for a long test ride on the bike and he said the engine is perfect, the noise he said im hearing is airbox roar !
so im happy with that, but still find it strange just how noisy it is, ive had many bikes and have never heard a airbox roar, certainly nowhere near as loud as this bike.

You say it sounds like something is being hit? So a knock, knock, knock ? How does that sound like a whoosh ? Im confused.

You are getting confused because I have never described the noise as a woosh.

I know, the whoosh is airbox roar your mechanic said the noise was. You described the noise as something being hit. Knock, knock.
Just saying as if it was my bike i would not be happy with a diagnosis of airbox roar. Im glad you thing his answer is ok. Ride safe

Strange, my 2014 VFR800 has the VTEC valve technology. The engine has 4 valves per cylinder, two are normally not in operation until about 6800 RPM when the VTEC kicks in. There is a definite 'roar' at that point, with the intensity greater with more throttle. Your engine has 4 valves per cylinder that are in operation all the time, but it is hard to imagine that Honda would design it to be so loud. Is it more prevalent under hard acceleration when the throttle body throats are open further than normal cruising?

Noise from a bike's intake can certainly be loud enough to drown-out the sound of the engine - and on a V-twin or V-four it will sound more like a 'knock' than a 'whoosh'. Anyone who's ridden a large-capacity Guzzi with bell-mouths on the carbs will know exactly what I mean when I say they sound more akin to a jack-hammer than a motorcycle when the throttle's opened wide. A V-four will do the same, to a lesser extent - just take out the air-filter before going for a run to prove the point!

That is very similar to what the motorbike mechanic said who is a good racer too, so he certainly knows what he's talking about.
