Well yesterday was a beautiful day here in the state of Maine. I was going to my daughters softball game when IT HAPPENED. I was at a stop sign and started to move up in line then BANG. I got hit from behind. The bike lurched ahead about 3 feet and went over on the right side. SHIT.....I thought my hand slipped off the clutch. The lady behind me got out and asked if I was ok. Then she said she was sorry she hit me. WHAT..... She said her brakes did not work. So I picked the bike up and looked it over. My high mount pipe was crumpled. Lower fairing was broken. Scratches on the other right side plastic. She had some bumper damage and a nice hole the size of my pipe . She insisted on calling the police and all that crap. I rode the bike home and started the tear down. Pipe was toast, Lucky I have spare fairing parts. I just replaced all my front fairings with new to me parts. They were almost mint cond. :Tsk: Checked rim, not bent. All in All she survived the crash relatively well. I think the pipe took the brunt of the impact. Tail was undamaged. So now what do I do. I have yet to here from her insurance company. I only had liability on my bike. This is a 26 year old motorcycle that you can't get body parts for anymore. I Ordered a new high mount pipe and figure a couple hundred bucks she will be back on the road again. Lesson learned. Don't trust anyone in front or BEHIND YOU. 20190608_125211.jpg 20190608_104853.jpg 20190608_104924.jpg

I was not hurt at all. I tried to settle with her but she already called her insurance company. She insisted they will fix it like new. So it will probably total the bike.. LOL

You probably should have left it alone until the insurance company saw it. I got hit a few years back and my bike got totaled but I was able to keep the bike a fix it for less than the payout.

There is nothing wrong with involving a person's insurance company. Yes, they are likely to write off an older bike, but I believe that are likely willing to settle with a person for a lesser amount should you wish to retain and keep the bike. They are also likely willing to step back from the claim if the insured wants to settle outside the insurance company, but at least having started the claim, you will have protection for your loss should the insured change their mind and want to walk on their offer to pay you outside the insurance company. I also believe most people over estimate just what the insurance companies will do for them. You have to realize, the insurance companies will do what ever is the basement bottom cost to them and their investors. They care not about you and your property. They care only about their liability and bottom line.

I straightened the exhaust hanger as best I could to clear the tire. The rest of the damage is still there. Took her for a 50 mile ride today. Seems ok. Drives and rides like it should . Will have to call her insurance company tomorrow. At least I can still ride. Summer is short here in maine. Keep the rubber side down and watch out for volvos.

Most importantly you’re ok! However, this is the nightmare for all of us with these older iconic VFRs; parts are hard to come by and others, including insurance companies, don’t value them. I hope it works out to get this great bike back on the road and looking good!

Well all is done with the insurance company.....They totaled my bike.....There settlement was $2600 and they take the bike or $2300 and I keep it. So far I bought a new muffler for $205 and this is what it looked like.. I took the $2300

I replaced the rh lower cowl with my spare and did some touch up paint....They wanted to put a salvage title on the bike but had issues since I had no title.
Maine did not require a title on 94 and older vehicles so I had to send them a bill of sale and registration to prove I owned the bike. I have put about 500 miles on the bike since the accident and have had no problems. I have to thank delkevick exhaust for saving my bike. The muffler stuck out the back just enough that it took all the impact from the hit. The rest of the damage was from falling over. She will not be as clean as before but I count my self lucky it was not worse. I think they totaled it because no body parts are available. Dam 26 year old bikes. LOL. And I live to ride another day. 20190714_143508-1.jpg

Take the $2300, sounds like a reasonable deal, since you were unhurt. Fix what you want and have cash left over.
