Just recently bought this 2000 VFR and it is red. I'm learning that they did only yellow in 2000 and then returned the red in 2001. My VIN is JH2RC4605YM201112 and it verifies as a 2000. Could this be a rogue red one, or did someone just change all the plastics on my bike at one time?

There is a color code under the seat.

I've heard of situations where two VFR owners have made complete fairing trades due to individual color preference.

So there are/were cases of 5th Gen VFRs that have perfectly fine fairings which don't match the year model color-code that you will find on the placard under the seat.

It'll be interesting to hear whether your 2000 year model VIN numbered VFR800 has the color-code for Yellow or for Red.

    Honda codes:
Year model 2000 = Pearl Shining Yellow Tricoat Y124P
    Year model 2001 = Italian Red R157

Yes, I saw the picture of your bike's VIN, it verifies the fact that your bike is a 2000.

The picture that we're all waiting to see is the under-seat area where there's a little sticker that shows the color of the bike.

    Here's mine (a Red '99 model):

Yes! Curiosity kills the cat... maybe the factory had some leftover red parts? Maybe 2 friends bought VFRs yellow and red and swapped as Greg suggested... - Crazy but possible... I gots to know..

Mine is a 2000. Verified by VIN.
And it is red and has the R157 colour code.

I have never heard that 2000 models only came in yellow. Only that yellow was only available on 2000 models (which does not exclude other colors).
Could it be a regional thing? I have seen tons of 2000 models and around here, red is by far the most common colour.

I think the Yellow only for 2000 was a U.S. thing. Every other country always got more color choices than the U.S.

Europe got Black and Dark Blue and Silver and the Silver+Red "Factory Anniversary" paint scheme.

You might have an answer to the mystery. Maybe the bike that the poster (2000 Red VFR) of this thread has purchased is actually a European model that somebody brought to the U.S.

I know that U.S. military members can bring back a vehicle for almost no money spent (it's considered part of their "household goods" shipment) after they finish a remote assignment in a foreign country.

Edit: I did some research and it appears that the original poster's VIN number is almost certainly a built for the U.S. (destination). So the importation idea isn't correct. So I'm back to betting the bike received a complete fairing change at some point in its history.

In Europe the yellow version was only available in 1999 (I know because mine is a 1999), in the US in 2000 (from what I found in my research).

I think Norse has got it . Yellow was only available in 2000, not ,in 2000 yellow was the only colour available .

Yes and no. The sticker is just on the undertail. I have one of those from a yellow bike and if I put that on my red one, it would have yellow colour codes but still be a red 2000. Same if you put a red fairing on a yellow bike.
And I do actually plan on putting the one from the yellow bike on mine, because I want to modify it.

Without knowing what has been done to it, it's hard to say with absolute certainty.
