just reading this out of interest and surprised to find that West Country Windings are in Harlow where I used to live, I always thought they were on the 'West Country' itself still very handy to know if ever needed

I was equally surprised. And it is handy that I am not based too far from them!

    Wow. That was quick!

So I've just had a call from WCW about my stator:

Firstly they confirmed that the stator is indeed faulty (burnt) . They explained to me that in their experience, Honda stators generally last about 24 - 27000 miles. They advised that my stator has in fact been rewound before, and enquired as to the mileage on the bike. It has done just over 50,000 miles - so that does add up.

They gave me the choice of having my stator rewired, or purchasing a (good quality) pattern replacment. ITtseems that people can be very impatient these days and don't want to wait. I have opted to have mine rewired.

Unfortunately they're are on a factory shut down for a week as from tomorrow, but will be getting on with it on the 11th.

    Further updates to follow!

Sounds like a very promising response. When the rewound stator is fitted it will be great to hear some feedback - I suspect there are others this side of the Pond who will be following your response, and may well take the same route if this provides a reliable solution.

As for the life of Honda stators I am not entirely surprised although mine was well past 60,000 miles but it seems people riding in warmer climes may well see far less life.

The simple fact remains - the charging system (all of it) on your VFR was bought in for a budget from outside suppliers and Honda were not really stressed by its quality. If it failed in the warranty period, then the cost of replacing it would be met by their dealers and behind the scenes claimed back from the suppliers.
If it failed after the warranty period it provided their dealerships a profitable supply of chargeable work. So hardly an unhappy position for Mr H?

Sadly very similar (carp) systems were installed on other Honda models and you will find very similar posts about charging system faults on Hornet.org, Fireblade.org..

It was only on the 7th and 8th Gens VFRs that it seems this seemingly eternal charging system mess was sorted out, and riders can finally enjoy VFRs which will not leave them stranded at the roadside.

Is there any reason you can’t fit an 8th gen stator and R/R on a 6th gen

The casting are from the same dies, just different part #

I checked the part numbers and they don’t appear to be any different apart from the model designation code, which tends to vary for pre 8th gen

    8th gen - 31120-MJM-D01 stator

    6th gen - 31120-MBG-D01 stator

The 6th gen is now listed as unavailable so I’d guess the 8th gen is dimensionally the same but has a an uprated electrical specification

WCW May have an idea, although I doubt they’re familiar with an 8th gen

I’m just about to roll over 30,000 miles on my 2015 and I’m not the only person to have topped 30k with no electrical problems

Looks good, now get it on and tell us those volt meter readings.
How much did it cost in total ?

WCW charged me £135 for the rewire, including return postage. Seems good to me.
Unfortunately I won;t be able to fit the stator until next weekend, but I will definitely post my progress on here!

Wow - compared with €465.00 for a new old stock stator that is quite a saving.

I hope it works out OK and look forward to your next update(s).

    Thanks

So I am just looking at installing the stator. Reading page 17-11 in the manual, which shows how to install the stator into the alternator cover, it mentions the torque of the bolts. Great. It also mentions sealant for the grommet. Any ideas as to what type of sealant this needs to be?

Moving onto page 17-12, it states to "apply sealant tothe mating surfaces of the crenkcase as show". Firs tI can't find where it is shown... and also.. same question.. what type of sealant?

Finally on 17-13, it says to install the wire clamp, the tighten the SH bolts. Here it doesn'tmention torque settings. Anybody know where I can find them?

Sorry to ask so many questions.

Even if someone can tell me where to look I'd be grateful.

    For 8th gen torque is 12Nm 1.2kgf-m, 9ftlbs
    Wire clamp is the same

    TB1207:B from Threebond or equivalent

Thank you. So the casing bolts are the same torque as the inner bolts fornthe stator itself.

I can't wait to get this done.

Without looking it up from recollection the bolts are M6 so yes they’re all the same torque

For that grommet you only need a small amount of high temperature gasket sealant. As I had a tube of Blue Hylomar lying around in the garage I used it for both the grommet and on the new gasket (after thoroughly cleaning both mating surfaces). 4 years later it seems to have done the trick.

Most motor parts shops will have a tube of something suitable - its not a Honda specific sealant required for the grommet.

My PDF manual has a photo and diagram on page 17-10 which basically shows the torx bolts on the stator/cover are all the same torque - 9 foot pounds.

Torque for bolt sizes is at the front of the manual or on the pictures at front of section
