I took off my stock 2004 Honda Interceptor Saddlebags for a couple of months of riding. When I went to put the bags on again, they wouldn't clear the top frame rail in order to lock the bags on the bike. Did the bags expand in the summer heat? Has anybody experienced this phenomenon? Any suggestions? Thanks! Handa Bag1.jpg

Hi Robert and Welcome to the MadHouse:Welcome:

When you get time please swing by the "introductions" forum and say Hi to the rest of the folks on here - please tell us a bit about your riding history and post up a photo or two of your VFR (It is easy - just click the "upload a file" link below and follow prompts).

As for the panniers no longer fitting - the panniers are a fixed size and the dimensions will not change materially between the Artic and the Sahara. So my guess is the mounting frame has come loose or is out of position.

I suggest you check all the carrier frame mounting bolts are still secure - especially the weird shaped linking piece behind the number-plate if that is loose or missing then the frame rails will tend to move inwards towards the wheels and could well result in the problem you describe.

    Take care - ATGATT

Thank you for your prompt reply, skimad. I just went out and checked the mounting bolts and they are all tight and secure, including the ones behind the licence plate. I thought about forcing the bottom frame rails outward from the wheel, but I don't think that would raise the rectangular piece on top enough to clear the bag. I'm hesitant to bend the frame where it hits the bag without taking it off the bike, but I guess I'll have to take it to a machine/welding shop to do it. I would appreciate any other suggestions.

Not familiar with these but can you put the top in first?

No, the bag sits on the frame bottom and the bottom groove of the bag has to fit first. Thanks.

I just put my bags on for the first time this year and had to slip the bottom over the bar then lift it slightly to slide the top part in. It always goes in that way. once it's locked in place it fits solid as it should.

Mine are also a little finicky putting on but they do go on and secure well. I let the bottom portion of the case hook on, then with the case handle fully extended, just slip it into the locking mechanism and put the handle flush to lock. Very often I do have to play with the positioning of the lower hooks though. Sometimes lifting them a bit, and sometimes adjusting them forward or backward to fit. I don't think the case rests on the rack at the bottom. I believe the case is just kept in place so it does not flap about side to side by the bottom rack. The case rests on the top locking mechanism.

I would seriously re-think the idea of bending those racks though. If the cases fi one time, and there has been not force or damage to the racks, then they are formed the way they were designed in the first place. I believe you just haven't quite got the knack yet. Took me a little time to put mine on and off as easy as a friend did so just persevere. It gets easier.

Thank you Zombie and Randy for your suggestions. I finally realized (duh) I was trying to fit the wrong parts together! Fits and looks great. I'm really happy I joined VFR World. I'm ready to go for a long ride!

Only my right side bag gives me a bit of trouble and does require a bit of finessing.
