Upgraded to a 6th Gen

    Hi everyone, I was in an accident a few months ago and just upgraded to a 04 VFR from a 14 CBR500R. The VFR only has 16k on the clock which oddly enough is only 2k more than my CBR. The bike is basically stock except for heated hand grips and a 2 Brothers exhaust. I just say I love this bike! Just a tad more power , and I have to say it’s a lot more comfortable. I actually feel safer on this bike than the little CBR. I’ve got quite a fair share of knowledge so hopefully I can help out here some how! Below is my very clean 10 year old new bike!

    Thanks, I’m a proud Cheesehead. Riding season I believe is over for me this year so it looks like I have all winter to make some changes to make her mine! Even though plans include putting the whale tail back on for hard side bags....that’s one thing this bike is lacking is under seat storage

    Wow - If you are about to park up the VFR for winter - I can only guess you live somewhere high up in the mountains like me.

    We had our first snow in the Alps a couple of weeks back - whilst I was out riding - but thankfully nothing serious and for now its back to clear roads and sunny riding hopefully for a few more weeks.

    If you read the manual Honda recommend all manner of steps whenever you are parking up a bike for winter.

    My bike is only really snowed in between December and April, so I have dumped a lot of the steps suggested by Honda and reduced the winterization steps to the minimum necessary to ensure the bike will fire up first time in spring.

    Basically I ride the bike until virtually out of fuel and then refuel the bike and a petrol canister with quality higher octane fuel. So avoid a supermarket fuel and choose 98 Premium rather than 95 octane standard, ride home to your garage and park on main stand - lube the chain and then use the fuel cannister to fill the petrol tank to the brim. By excluding air from the tank it stops rust developing inside the tank over the winter months. The fuel will however degrade slowly during winter storage hence by filling with higher octane fuel the fuel will still be plenty good enough to fire up first time in spring. Always use fuel stabiliser if you think the bike is going to be unused for 6 months plus. In spring don't forget to use up the fuel in the canister.

    Remove the battery and keep indoors - they do not like protracted freezing conditions - once a month put it on charge for a few hours.

    Push the tyre pressures up a couple of pounds above spec (some will leak out over the winter).

    Place a sack of sand on the pillion seat adjust the content so there is just enough weight to basically take most of the weight of the front wheel - it should be teetering on the main stand. Obviously pretty much anything you have to hand will work but - things like tins etc will leave dents in the pillion seat for ages - don't ask how I know. This should however prevent flat spots on the tyres(tires) and relieve pressure on the fork springs.

    Smother anything metal (except the brakes) with ACF50 to prevent rust/corrosion during storage. In spring any ACF50 present on the exhaust or engine will burn off and create clouds of smoke when you first warm up the bike but don't worry it will all be gone in 10 minutes of fast riding.

    Finally cover the motorbike with a breathable cover over to keep dust from settling on the bike.

    Thanks everyone, enjoyed every minute of my ride with her last week. Only reason I’m done for the season already is because I was put into a full leg brace last Thursday from my accident. It will be awhile before I’ll be able to sit in the saddle again comfortably.

    Thanks, I live just a little over a hour away from there. I do a few poker runs a year. I’ve been wanting to do the kettle moraine run....maybe next Spring.
