    great feedback- thanks!
do you commute daily, and leave the bags on? how do they feel at speed- much change in handling? I have never ridden with panniers before. any thoughts about how she looks and runs with the 3p brackets on, but the bags off? i dont want to have to pull the brackets frequently.... but its good to know its an easy job if I want to lighten her up for a day in the mountain roads.

I'm a packrat and love to drag my crap everywhere I go. I have a tank bag, but it prevents me from getting behind the windscreen at speed on the highway, or really pushing down in the curves. a little bit worried that panniers will affect handling somehow (not based on logic or complaints, just a fear) to leave them on all the time. so the idea of an easy pop-off is appealing, when I'm not hauling camping gear or using a grocery run as an excuse to go for a ride.

If anyone with oem panniers cares to chime in about how the bags affect their riding and feel, and if they also camp/travel with them, I'd be grateful for the insight and contrast.

is this just an aesthetic/budget decision that I am overcomplicating by thinking that there are substantial functional difference between the OEM and AM bags?
leaning toward SHAD for volume on long trips, OEM for everyday ease and minimal change in look.
    :( decision paralysis

Once you get used to riding with them ( width) you can basically forget about them. Only time you notice them is if you have something large rattling around in them.

I used to ride a pan 11 &13 with stuff in them and quite happily scrape the pegs.

Whilst the Oe bags well suit the bike ,had there been another option at time of purchase I would probable have gone for bigger panniers, mind you Oe does away with the associated scaffolding that comes with aftermarket stuff.

I have the OEM side cases too, with a Krauser 47 liter topbox. That combo of 3 cases suffices (largely) for a 10-day trip. I increase the preload when fully loaded, but haven't noticed any handling change nor difficulty. Last holiday, there even was some (unintentional) offroad on our route, which didn't give me any extra handling problem...

I'm not a commuter, I'm retired (I like Mondays) and when I ride it is usually a tankful on a nice sunny day and carry nothing but a tank bag. I do however travel and in fact I'm planning to ship my bike to Europe (air canada) leave it there year round and ride there Apr/May and Sept/Oct--the shad's will be on it. All my camping gear fits in top case, more than enough clothes in the others. I kinda like leaving one packed rather sparsely to stash helmet. As far as riding, I stay away from Interstate and 4 lanes as much as possible; however, I have slabbed 600 miles one day at 75-80 and did not notice the bags. when removed there is a small rack visible but that comes off easily, Honda bags just lift off with no residual. I can put whole system on from scratch in 10 mins or less and take off in less than 5. I'm cheap, on a fixed budget and <$700 appealed to me. Would i rather have the Honda's? For $700 yes for anything greater than $900 not really. I like the looks of the Shad's, but they are a tool and they get the job done.

Appreciate the insight guys- grateful for the forum! gonna try SHAD sides for now, if they work out nicely I'll add the topcase. if it doesnt suit me, the re-sale market for the panniers looks solid. SHADusa has some nice deals on thE auction site frequently, so snagged one of those sets, $350 and got the liner bags too. nice folks. I haven't done a moto tour before, thus the decision paralysis. ;p I see that several sites, including Ayers have the OEMs for about $700, but then you still need two lock sets and lock mounts, so around $750 all in for the sides. Tempting, but I'm still half price with Shad, and I know I'm gonna scratch the heck out of them when I travel.

Sounds like a pretty sexy retirement, Zeta- well sorted sir! I hope to follow suit in a few years. some of my fondest memories were up Costa Brava and through the Pyrenees, and I was in a cage back then. would be so much nicer on a bike... congrats!

Hope to see you all out there.... gradually gonna extend my reach beyond Georgia after spring. but holler if you are passing through Atlanta metro. I'm in the process of setting up a cheap tire changer and small service area in the garage. we are happy to be a pit stop :)
make it a great day all, and thanks again for the thoughts.

The width is the issue to get used to which for me had me paying more attention when traffic filtering. Had my bike up to 140 with no stability issues.

I once measured the width of the OEM side cases, and my finding at the time was that they were (are) exactly as wide as the mirrors (which made me feel comfortable when filtering last summer holiday on the Paris périphérique on my way to southern France).

Ron Ayers had the best price for OEM bags that I’ve found. They are a bit small than I care for, but the convenience of the matches key and clean look with them off the bike is great. I’m looking at givi for a top box though.

I followed suit with zeta's settup. AWESOME.
CLIMAX no longer had the top case brackets (they showed as available on their website, but a week after I ordered them, I got a one line email saying they were out and so was shad). ended up ordering those and the saddlebag brackets from two different italaian Moto eBay shops. The side brackets lost the hardware in transit, as the shad boxes are poorly packed and have zero packing material. The bars punched holes in the box, looking like Swiss cheese on arrival. Took a few weeks to replace. The second company got the top bracket here in three days. Shad USA helped me out with the cases. (Sh36 sides, sh39 top). I planned these for weekend camping, but the utility increase has me using them in town regularly already... Finding more excuses to take the bike for errands now that I can haul some groceries, etc... :). It's worth the hassle if tracking down the kits!
    Tyvm all! Ride well

I know you're speaking of 8g bags, but I have the Honda bags for the 6g and although the sides require brackets (don't look quite as seamless as the 8g) I echo the comments about how useful they are... on and off in a second, match the lines of the bike, the color match is very nice as it keeps the whole bike looking sharp.... I watched and waited a couple of years and ultimately got them from a guy on the other side of the country through Kijiji. I paid ~$500 including shipping for the 2 side bags and brackets in almost-new condition for a 6g bike. If i could find the topcase and bracket for $300 to add on, i would. I do agree that almost $2k is a ton of money BUT they really are worth it... if you can hold out a bit though you may get lucky and find a used/great condition deal like I did. PS mine were bought in the winter (canada) so i probably saved a few bucks due to off-season... and it was right after Christmas, when prices tend to go low as people have bills to pay off.

    I'd do it again.

If I sprung for a brand new bike like an 8g, I would probably pony up and pay the big bucks for the Honda luggage if after the first winter I didn't see a good used set. Totally worth it.
