I am a knight from China. I have seen that riders from other countries love to maintain their motorcycles by themselves. Is it because the after-sales service is too expensive or some other reason?

Because I dont trust any dealer on the planet to perform maintenance or modifications with quality craftsmanship as well as I do.
I wont let a dealer tighten a licence plate.

We have a saying where I'm from:
If you can't keep it running, you can't ride.

Basic maintenance is little more than jobs that a child could do. Why would you pay someone to do that for you and then have to trust that they did it right?

I like the satisfaction of doing it myself. It's a good thing to be one with your scooter....

we work on our bikes cuz dealership mechanics are usually too young and lack experience and don't take the time to do things right. we can blame evil capitalism for that since making quick money is the main priority.

I am not sure if this helps but here are some typical 6th Gen VFR800 servicing costs in France (prices include labour and 20% TVA (tax)

    oil filter €14.20
    oil 10w30 €60.45
    sump washer €1.00

    Chain and sprockets replacement €199.00

You can of course buy most genuine Honda service parts online (or find cheaper aftermarket alternatives) and if you are happy to do all the servicing tasks yourself then it will be a lot less money.

Meantime there is nice comfy seating at my dealership, free coffee and copies of the latest motorcycle magazines to browse and anyone can watch the work being done on their bike by the service department. The coffee machine is of course placed right at the back of the accessories department just beside their discounted bin with loads of keenly priced clothing even Honda stuff for kids from age 2+ so they probably recover the free coffee cost many times over.

The service department do it by the book and have never let me down. My own time is worth more than their €65/hour charge out rate so I am happy to let them look after it.. 200,000Km+ and my 6th Gen still starts first time.. what more can you ask?

However with Winter fast approaching this side of the planet (we had snow a few weeks back), once again there are a lot of used 8th Gens on sale in the small adds. Some for silly money - so I may just have to upgrade.

I'd rather make money quick than slow. You're in the wrong country man.

Separately, my local dealer has a blonde loud mouthed obnoxious bitch you have to go through to get anything done in their service dept. (she doesn't know a piston from a headlight) and it takes forever at too high a price. Reason enough to do my own work and know it's done right without the blonde bitch being in my life. There's nothing more annoying than this particular blonde female (I guess) on a power trip. When there is no power and she is incredibly obnoxious, that makes her a supreme bitch. Just venting here a little....LOL! I also just ordered a set of front brake pads for $30 less PER SIDE online instead of from this dealership!!! I guess some people just don't shop around. It's hard to tear up a VFR so all the normal PM work is done by me.

I have. I've owned two BMW's and didn't have the problem because they didn't break and I knew the owner well. He didn't put up with bulllshit from his people and treated customers like customers.

Aside from the money savings, I actually enjoy the puzzle like challenge of doing my own work. Between a shop manual, YouTube and VFRWorld you can pretty much preview what you need to do and prep yourself as needed. Most importantly, doing the job right and through gives you the safety assurance that the job was done in the full knowledge that skimping or laziness puts you in danger. If that is not motivation to be spot on then what is.

Because the dealer wants 1/3 of what I paid for my bike for each service. I can do most all of the work myself, just for the cost of parts. Working on bikes is good for the soul.

If I lived in Kalifornia, I'd be cynical too.
