when I bought my bike guy said he had a bunch of stuff extra in NY and I can have them, just pay shipping.

I assume you mean the two bolts at the front which go into the rear cowl..... 90116-MBG-000 is U$12.75 ea. at Partzilla.com, however, I'd think one could use an alternate fairing bolt that would fit flush. These are common on many Hondas, ST1300 or earlier GL1800 as well. But I don't know of any equivalent of the long OEM VFR bolt.

That's a nice very nice get - many of these types of bolts are available, as raYzerman noted, on Partzilla-especially ones used on other models in subsequent years. Partzilla has the standard catalog diagrams and clearly indicates which parts are available and which ones are not (i.e., discontinued). If not available, you can get the part number and search other Honda outlets, though I've found that Partzilla is probably one of the better stocked outlets. If that fails, I typically move on to EBay and input the complete part number or try a variant. Sometimes you get lucky (I recently scored a NOS fuel pump for a 1986 VFR750).

In my experience, depending on the type of part, where to look branches off from EBay, keeping in mind that some of the parts are nearly impossible to get (such as the fairings) and there are aftermarket sources available (e.g., for fiberglass fairings). Options seem to open up if you're open to non-stock parts. Hope this helps!

RS... there are other cowl bolts that are plentiful you can use. I have lower cowl bolts in the RC26 seat cowl. You just have to make sure it's a shouldered bolt that tightens down without crushing the plastic. Honda uses a couple different lengths of shoulders on their wide head phillips cowl bolts, some designed to go thru just plastic and some (longer) designed to go through a rubber bushing as well (like the lowers on a VF1000R). Let me take some measurements off of the bolts and an OEM cowl and see which one is better suited.

    Short shoulder:

No rubber grommets, that wouldn't look good on a cowl. Hold on, bout ready to head to the shop.

So the bike I have the short collar bolt installed has a fiberglass cowl and thickness is perfect.

The correct cowl bolt is shouldered 4mm.
    Long is 6mm
    Short is 3mm

I also found a cowl bolt that measures 5mm. Not sure what it's from tho, reminds of something from a 90-97 VFR.

Maybe making some custom collars from some aluminum tubing might be an option too.

Another suggestion if you have a selection with various shoulders. Normally you bottom the shoulder when it's snug. If you were to put a rubber washer under the head, it would be mostly invisible and would prevent it from backing out. Some bikes use clear plastic washers to prevent damage to the part (e.g., Yamaha FJR).

I totally agree, good options. And I think you mentioned some ST cowl bolts. I dug one out and it is a perfect fit (4mm shoulder), just a smaller footprint on the allen head, but still covers the hole.

FYI, was in a Honda dealer today... many of the dirt bikes had those long bolts, probably 6mm thread size, but don't know... 90116-KZZ-900 ($1.67 Partzilla). Looks like their intended use is to hook bungies on.
