I had occasion to have the clutch cover off my 5th Gen, 65k miles, and seemed like quite a bit of slack in the oil pump drive chain...... the good book doesn't seem to have any info on how much that is when new or what is an allowable limit for stretch. While it is in no danger of climbing the sprocket, it wouldn't take much more to get there. If it broke, the good news is we have an oil pressure switch, I know of a bike where the chain broke but that bike only has an oil level sensor... so he didn't know and had some damage. Has anybody had an oil pump drive chain break on a VFR?

Break? No. But I did replace mine when I did the timing chains. There is slack and that's ok. Even the new one will have slack. It's not under tension like the timing chains. I figured while I was in there why not just do it.

I agree with you and made the decision just to button it up since I had no reason to pull the clutch and because we have an oil pressure switch. I only had the cover off to fix it cosmetically. I will order a new chain and replace it during next winter's maintenance..... thanks.
