Hey Viffers, I have done all electrical updates including a new VFRness install, and today I went to start her, and hot battery, everything seems good., but nothing. Headlights, indicator bright. Can anyone walk me through cleaning the thumb starter switch? I am ready to pass this bike on after 6 pretty damn good seasons all because of stupid little unreliabilities like this. Appreciate all the help you guys have given! Best, Joe
There isn't too much to the switch cluster just go easy and pay attention to how everything's oriented inside, to take it off easier you may find that disconnecting the throttle cables helps (mark/ take clear photos), the starter switch itself is just a spring switch, so it is literally just a spring and 2 contacts, wd40/degreaser / contact cleaner and a small stiff brush will do the job just make sure you break down the degreaser with water and dry the internal components before you put it back together mate, it's how I clean mine and never had problems --robotics tech for my day job, mechanic and fabricator for a hobby, oil may run through my veins... but that's only after a horrific injury--
Thanks, Sc4recr0w! Rode my bicycle to the Bronx AutoZone store and got bulb grease. When the rain stops I'll pull the starter off and do it. I am certain the switch is the problem. Will let you know how it comes out. Best, JoeB
I am concerned about breaking the white plastic/nylon ring that holds the throttle cables inside the housing trying to disconnect the throttle cables. Any thoughts on how to get the cables loose from the slots? Do I need to disconnect them at the other end as well? So CLOSE to the starter switch, and so far away!
