    Hi all.

I decided to remove pair system. I took everything apart today and now the pair system is out.

Orange seals, plates, other parts under the seals were just totally black, so I bathed everything in acid (except for rubber seals of course) and then gave it a proper rub in an acid bath.

I have bought thick plates from ebay and block off knob which goes directly into the front of air box inlet where PAIR used to connect.

Now, because I have no new seals with those plates I bought (I don't want to use silicone ), and I read up on the forum that I should leave orange seals in, I have few questions before I put it together:

    1. Under the plates with orange seals there are 2 metal kinda sieves. Do I put them back? Are they the support for top plates?

    2. Each of metal plates had little bolts and nut to attached 2 small plates, one flat , one slightly bent. Do I install them there too?

    3. Shall I just put back the top plates with orange seals and then close it off with my plates I bought?

    4. Cleaning pair "sockets" looks like a nightmare job to me. Do I need to clean them like I did with other parts, or just compress air to get rid of dirt and that's it?

    Thank you for help!

Removed the reeds and reed stops and associated screws, keep the gaskets/seals in place

Clean the screened pieces and reinstall

Reinstall the gaskets/seals without the reeds and reed stops

    Install the block off plates

    Done.

Understood, just was not too sure about bottom baskets. Now when I look at them, there 2 pairs , they do differ a bit, and I forgot where I pulled them off, front or back:D

Just noticed, my block off plates have drilled hollows for reeds bolt heads, maybe I will leave it as it is and just use plate to block off:)

After 60k mine looked very good which surprised me, just dusted things off and left all in place, plates had the clearances for the reed screws, no harm at all in leaving them there they don't have to do anything. I did check the exhaust ports and they were clean.

I tried all the trick mods when I had my 2003, didn’t seem make any appreciable difference, only mod that a big change was the PC III, evened out roughness below 3500. Enjoying my 8th gen in its stock form, fast enough for me.

Removing a PAIR system doesn't get you any performance improvements... just cleans up the engine bay and loses a bit of weight.

The huge pile of parts that was on my shop floor after removing the system was the biggest reason on my ST1100. I had the carbs off and was replacing all the coolant o-rings, why wouldn't I yank that shit? Plus, when I took it apart to scavenge screws and shit, the diaphragms were starting to fail (bike has 27K). The BAD popping on decel I had is gone completely, but I did rejet, so I don't know if I can attribute it all to that.

Right. Job done. It can be pain in the hole when you don't take pictures during taking it apart, the: "ah yeah, I will remember that" usually does not work yet I always do it ha!
After first fire up, I could hear air sucking in the front quite bad, however it stopped after while. I made sure plates were flat, clean and tight, used smoke to see if there is any air leaking.
Idle speed went down from usual 1200rpm to 700, then after while 800-900 , then it stopped at 1000rpm. I adjusted it back to 1200.
Hope it is ok. No FI light, no air leak, also removed snorkel:)
In the end I decided to just install plates and orange seals, nothing else.
    Thank you for all help!

I was gonna ask if you were planning to perform an "airbox mutilation".

Did this one with multiple dyno runs to make sure it was actually making improvements. Don't just start hacking on it, do it in steps and confirm each step. Also keep in mind the engine had extensive work done to the top end and was running a PC3 with no O2 sensors, flow matched injectors, BMC Race filter, and blocked PAIR system.

Took it for a short 300 miles spin. Must say, it is smoother on lower rpms and not jumpy. Taking snorkel out cause nice sound when accelerating ;-)

How did you manage to get 300 miles done in this lockdown? does the snorkel out make much difference?

2 weeks ago I did over 1k miles. Lock down does not bother me;-). I am not getting into virus crap topic on this forum;-). Took snorkel out, I can hear a bit different sound when opening up the throttle, but don't know if it made huge difference because I removed PAIR at the same time, so if you still have your PAIR, remove snorkel and check if it makes difference:)

That's nice, a different law applies to you then than the rest of the citizens, what part of the country are you in? can't go a few miles here without seeing a Garda checkpoint. hoping it's eased from this weekend, think the unnecessary journeys clause will still be there so that will still rule out going for a spin just for the sake of it.

I have been abiding by the rules about social distancing and wearing a mask to the super market. It is my understanding they we are allowed to go for walks as long as we practice SD. No gatherings or large groups. Most everybody does the same, however, it was 87 here on Saturday and several beaches were busy. I went for a ride Sat, and there were many other bikers and bicyclists out by themselves. Since I wear a full face helmet which acts as my mask, stay by myself so I don’t see a problem. I am considered a high risk because of my age (75) and my high blood pressure so I am very wary of getting infected, take my temp twice a day.
