    Hello VFRWORLD!

Just picked up this looker today. 2002 with 18k miles. She needs a little TLC but still a beauty. She's been down in her lifetime as the saddle bags have been patched and repainted and there are minor scratches on the front right fairing.

Covid19 has got me bored and although I'm able to WFH, I just felt the itch to get back in the saddle after a 16 year hiatus. The SF Bay Area and California in general are riddled with fantastic twisty roads and back when I was riding a lot, we would be out every weekend. 200-400 mile days were the norm. Then we got into trackdays and were blessed with 4 tracks with the furthest only 4 hours away.

Hung up the leathers quite a few years back and now I want to enjoy riding again.

Hoping to get to know her quite intimately in the next few weeks. I do enjoy wrenching on my bikes and cars and have most of the tools needed, but I know when my skillset is not up to certain tasks and then I'll leave her to the pros.

As with any new to me bike I'll go through and swap out all the fluids, brake pads, check all electrical connections and general clean up. I will bring her to a qualified tech to do the valve check and a more thorough inspection. Will go to steel braided lines as well. I plan on upgrading the springs and shocks as I'm a bit on the heavier side at 220lbs wet and I think they are do to be overhauled/upgraded/replaced (with more modern forks perhaps?)

She came with a stack of records and she has had the wiring harness recall done, but even so, should I still upgrade to the VFRNess wiring harness?

I know I have a lot to learn about this motorcycle and I'm sure glean as much as I can going through the forums.

Looking forward to learning and hopefully contributing as well.

BTW, do I or should I join VFRD as well?

    Cheers! 20200522_192431.jpg

On your list of things to do, upgrade the RR to the good mofsets and its wiring scheme, no need for VFRness at all, and the load is lightened on the stock wiring as the feed for the RR comes direct from battery.

Welcome to the World. Too bad your bike is red. Otherwise it would be a really fast ride. Many here do belong to both VFRW and VFRD so ya, go ahead. I've ridden through the SFB area a couple times now heading further south to meet up with a few so cal scoundrels. Rats really when I think of it. And yes, California does have a affair share of nice roads

Thanks for the heads up on the RR. I'll do more research on them so I know which one to get. From my initial quick searches, it seems like people are using the RR from an Yamaha R1?

Roadstercycle.com - Jack is very helpful and his site has all the information/ video instructions you will need for your charging system. No pressure sales push, he even states that if you are looking to purchase a used R/R and want to confirm that it is one that will be a benifit for your bike and not a china knock-off, he would. I understand that he is also a member here.

I don't know what came over me. Even after I had the 02 safe and sound in my garage, I was still perusing Craiglist and came across an ad for a 01 with only 15k miles. babied and garaged it's whole life. It is in cherry shape. I would say 9/10 cosmetically. 20200525_203443.jpg No saddle bags like the 02, but the previous owner threw in 2 bike covers, a tank bag, the original wind screen, seat cowl, Gaerne riding boots (in excellent shape and they fit!), Aerostich Roadcrafter suit (fits as well! Bonus!!). Needs tires and will go through it like the 02. Long story short, I went to go see it, fell in love, and and brought it home. Now I have an 01 and an 02 that I get to play with. I'm pretty sure I'll keep the 01, but I do like the 02 as well. Maybe I'll just keep both! Hahaha.

Sounds good. I will reach out to them on teh SH847 RR.

On suspension, I will contact Jamie as well. Seems I have bunch of options.

    Thanks duccmann!

LOL! And you know what is funny? The wife did not even bat and eye and asked me if I wanted new riding boots for Father's Day! Whoo-hoo! Daytona Road Star GTX's!!

01 for the twisties, 02 for 2 up with the wife on short trips up or down the CA coast.

But...yes....01 sings to me more right now. Hehe.

Crap, she's a keeper!! The wife I mean... Iff'n you want to save a coupla bucks, the FH020AA RR is just fine, can handle all the load of a VFR stator. Used on Yamaha FJR, FJ-09, etc. and they don't have failures with their higher output stators. You can find used ones, need connectors, wire, etc..... but Roadster's kit for new one with the harness will not be a whole lot more and save you a bunch of time..

When you get that far on the RR,. I have 6th gen mount plates for both the FH020AA and the SH 847. Skip the one from Roadstercycle.

See you on both sides of the fence!
