Took off front and side fairings and ended up with 2 black plastic fasteners

    As the title says, I took the front cowl and side fairings off my new to me 5th gen. She is in pristine condition...all tabs are intact, no cracks, everything fits properly.

    I had to change the left front blinker/indicator as the running light was out. I figured I'd take it all off, clean everything and put it back together.

    Everything was pretty much straight forward except that I ended up with 2 extra black plastic fasteners. I've searched all over but obviously not thorough enough or I would not be making this post. I'm afraid that they need to go somewhere that got covered up by some other plastics.

    Also, while the running light on the blinker works now, the low beam on the left headlight is now not working. I think I might have damaged a connector while trying to get the connector out. Oh well.

    I think I'll have to take a look at a schematic diagram of the front end.

    Maybe the 2 bottom ones, connecting the side fairings together at the very bottom of the bike? I just finished putting mine together. There are 8 in total in the front. 2 in the center low of front fairing, 2 on each side (back and low corner of front faining + top and front corner of the black inner fairing) and 2 at the bottom.

    With my increasing age and decreasing memory, I now use small plastic cups for each area. Some of the bolts look the same, but have different size threads.

    Just a little FYI, I replaced all those annoying plastic fasteners with the push-pin type where you push the center in and they release.... you're probably missing the two at the bottom of the chin area?

    That is a great idea and I usually have magnetic trays for everything and take pics along the way. This time I did not do that and now here I am. Hahahha! Thanks for your reply!

    Nice tip. The ones I have are the cross slot (Phillips or JIS) fasterners. Is there a good place to source these? I've also heard that some are using fasteners from other manufacturers, auto industry even.

    If you want 90 degree release (instead of threaded), Phillips/JIS plastic ones that work well, try the ones for Yamaha FJR side covers (anything after 2006). Not cheap but good. I still prefer the push pin type rather than having to insert and turn something.

    I would actually prefer the push pin type than the cross. I'm heading to a Honda dealership today to pickup the o-rings for my oil cooler lines. I'll see if they have the push pins in stock and hopefully a clutch lever.

    I have used these for years on my 6th gen. I suspect the fairing fasteners are the same for both the fifth and sixth gens. SOmeone please corect me if I am wrong. These are the push button type. They do fit tighter than the OEM crap but they are far better than OEM as far as I am concerned, and far far cheaper. It is the M6 you want. Because the two beneath the fairings take a sit kicking, I have started using black zip ties for those two. They are out of sight so no one will know.

    Well, there you go. You can get a package of 10 of these almost for the same price as you would spend at the dealership for 1 OEM. I have very few if any OEM left on my bike. I have been rotating them through the fairings to get rid of them in favour of these after market ones. Mind you, you do have to pay shipping and handling but they are still quite a bit cheaper. I have seen Bolt Fastener packags around but none that I have seen have the fairing clips so I just ordered then from this site.

    Thanks for the lead on those fasteners! I went to the dealership today and found out how expensive these things are! Talk about sticker shock! $3.95 US for ONE!!! I haven't broken any on my 2001, but suspect that I might on my 2002, so I'll go ahead and order some of these now.

    Oh, on another note related to my original post I found where my extra 2 fasteners go. Right under the clip ons on the black plastic there is one on each side.

    I did finally find the missing holes for the last 2 fasteners. I believe by your description "top and front corner of the black inner fairing". Cheers!
