New member here, i recently purchased a 83 interceptor. this bike was a bucket list item for me. I owned a 83 Sabre back in the day, but always wanted an Interceptor. Bike runs and rides but the rear shock has crapped out. I have read an researched a lot of posts and it looks like the best option is buying a new shock. trying to keep costs down at this point I saw a post where a CB919 shock could be modified to fit. Does anybody have experience doing this? I work in a tool and die shop so fabricating adapter brackets is no problem. I just want to sure that the CB919 will fit with modifications.

There is no stock Honda shock that is a bolt on, or even minimum modification application. The info regarding the 919 shock was mostly about the spring rate, and that it would be one of the only stock springs that would be suitable for the VF500F with a 200lb-ish rider. The 919 shock would still need major modification due to the bottom mount style of the 919 shock and length of the VF750F unit. Very similar to this CBR600F2 shock modified for my VF1000F by DMR.

It worked very nicely. Correct spring rate (Sonic Springs) installed and custom valving. I opted for the non-remote reservoir style shock due to the frame and coolant tank on the 1000F getting in the way. This shock is now headed for my stock 8500 mile 1986 VF1000R, as I have replaced it with a YSS unit for more ride height adjustment after a wheel swap. The original will get wrapped and boxed for when I die.

You should really consider one of those two options: DMR or YSS (or Hagon). I'm not even sure if Jamie is modding shocks for VFs anymore.

Thanks for the info. believe me I am a charter member of the more money than brains club, I am just trying to avoid spending $600 on a shock for a bike that i paid $1200 for. I would like to get something rideable relatively cheap so that I can evaluate whether or not I want to invest anymore in the bike. I understand that no shock is going to be a bolt on, but I have the capabilities required to make the extension brackets and cut the grooves as shown in the example pic.

thanks for the info, I ended up finding a good deal on a new YSS replacement. Probably the smarter choice than trying to modify something.
