Having had both for number of years, the 4th and 5th are really 2 different flavors of bikes. The 4th has a jewel like quality to it and has a classic feel to it. Ducati could have designed it. For the 5th, its the engine... Raw, wicked, abuse me feel to it. That's what hooked me to get one and sell the 4th.

I have ridden both the fifth and 6th gen and to be honest, I didn't really see much difference in performance or handling between the two stock. I will admit, I only rode the 5th gen for a short period of time while Reg (moderator here) was trying to make mine kick out when the V-tec kicked in. So he told me after the ride the basterd. AS far as fuel economy goes I have no clue. A few have asked me that about just about every vehicle I have owned and some of them a few times. Simply put, I really don't monitor that. I buy what I like and deal with the cost to run.

I have also ridden an 8th gen. Now those are the sweetest looking of the VFRs as far as I am concerned, but they changed the ergonomics on them enough that I could not ride one for more than an hour. I had cash in had to buy that bike but had to say no. Instead I spent some money on sprucing up my 6th gen.

The one thing I do like much more on my 6th gen is that the exhaust is way up out of the way and exposes the single side arm feature. If that makes any difference to you.

White was, is and always will be the fastest colour. You can't get that in a 5th gen.

I don't notice the VTEC much as I usually am a good distance above 7000rpm.... The bike then feels a lot livelier & fun...

If the ergos of a 6th work for you then you should be able to get pretty good deal.

Its just so "fuggly" I can't even begin to tell you, yeh, relays and just ill thought out placement of key areas during maintenance, linked brakes? = Lame brain braking, forget bleeding them without an air assisted bleeding system (MityVac.) Not a fan of abrupt v-tec (comes on at 7000 and makes some noise with a little push.) Nuff Sed from the peanut gallery, Hey Capt!!!

I would like to get a V4 with those gear driven camshafts. Probably a 5th gen although you make a good case for the 4th gen. I just think I'd like to own a fuel injected bike for once.

I looked at a bunch of articles/videos on the VFR1200 too. Man that seems like a neat bike and shaft driven as well. I could see one of those in my future but they are quite a bit more $$ than a 5th gen.
