Ya I know I know. I learned that lesson with my Magna project. On engine #2

And the list was not necessarily chronological . More of a "to do'

This bike was non running, but cranked over easily. Sounds of compression. Ran for a few seconds off gas down the carb throats.

Carb insides are greenish goo and float needle is frozen on #1 so into the ultrasonic while I wait for rebuild kit from BillyC. Oh and the plenum from eBay.

Carb boots in the wintergreen sauce for rejuvenation.

And why did they have to rotate the engine backward so it's a royal PITA to change sparkplugs??
    (Don't have factory tool kit)
Can do plugs and or compression check on the Magna in like 10 minutes

Are there no intake funnels for inside the air cleaner base?

I don't see them listed in the fiche

Also I forgot to mention the chunks missing from the plenum are GONE. I would have to fab something up to replace the aluminum in the contour of the base.

Well beyond my level of repair. If I HAD TO, I could probably make it work, but there's a replacement on eBay that made it here today that I'm going to use for now.

Absolutely. I'm getting the super kit from BillyC.

Very impressed with his kits for the Magnas.

A nice soak, ultrasonic scrub, and some new orings overall and she might just be almost ready to rock.

yeah, sure, but remember to pray: it's a VF500, so you'll need some good luck. ;)

Billy's outback is down until January.

Guess I'll be polishing needle seats and praying bowl gaskets are good!

    Already found one pinched diaphragm
Think it'll be ok if I reseat is correctly and let it re-conform.

Moisten a shop rag with a little lacquer thinner and spin the float valve Viton tips in a couple pinched fingers. The rag will be black. Move to a fresh area and repeat.

Soak a Q-Tip with some carb cleaner and give the seats a spin. Now take a FRESH small Phillips screwdriver and just with the weight of the screwdriver, no extra force, give a few spins in the seats. If you have another nice fresh Phillips a slightly different size, repeat with that one. Now give it a polish if you want and clean up with the a soaked Q-Tip.

In over 30 years of working on VF/VFR carbs - mine, friends and customers - I have NEVER bought float valves or seats. And have not any leaks or comebacks.

Now, perhaps in another 10 years, these original parts might finally be done. But I'll still grab some crusty old valves out of a parts bike that haven't been soaking in new shitty fuel and give it another whirl.

Oh... and -041 viton orings are the perfect size for float bowls. WAY cheaper. I always have a huge bag of them around. Like less than 50 cents each if bought in any kind of qty.

I've used a little kitchen cleanser on a Q-tip to clean and polish needle seats, but it takes alot of washing to remove all traces of it. i don't think any float needles (except maybe new ones) are viton-tipped, although the capt' is never incorrect.

Is -041 a USA size as I can’t find anything about that size here in the U.K.

in the country that started the industrial revolution that O-ring must certainly be available maybe under a different description.

So I found what might be the size

    2.989 ID 0.07 CS

    That’s about 76mm x 1.8 CS, that sounds a little small?

Carb #1 seat didn't look bad after after a qtip and a little elbow grease. Needle tip isn't dented.

Pinched diaphragm, but Im pretty sure it'll be ok once reseated.

Jet needle is a bit varnished, but I'm sure it will clean up.

Going to dive deeper into disassembly maybe Friday. Only missing one thrust spring so far .

Mixture screw orings same as Magna 3x1mm?

The cross section is on the smaller size on a -041, your 1.8 sounds about right, Waylander.

I file down the locating bosses just a bit to ensure the bowl seats all the way onto the carbs. I also run a flat file across the bowl surface (where the o-ring groove is) to knock down any casting imperfections. If you do that and lay the o-ring in the groove, you will see it sits plenty "proud" for sealing. No worries.

The only bike I ever had a problem with was a 83 VF750F where the locating bosses were extra tall for some reason and kept the bowl from seating. Now I just do it on all my carbs when rebuilding.

Getting closer. That's no air filter housing cover. Open base to carbs. Bench/eyeball sync.

I need to do a little better carb clean I think and then she'll probably make it around the neighborhood

"bench" and "eyeball" sync are two different things. But as long as they are coming back out, it should be a runner.

They were eyeballed on the bench.

Valves will need to be adjusted I'm sure, so I'll save the feeler strip sync for later

Radiator has a leak between the fins.. looks like something nailed it pretty good at some point. Hope it can be repaired.
