Today was Detailing day. since Im waiting on a Carb kit, and I cant time the oil pump until the carbs are on, and I cant put the pipes on until the oil pump is timed, im in a holding pattern.

I painted the ATAC PV housings yesterday, so today I have to paint the flaking clutch cover and clean the rest of the engine.

Nothing like a bit of new paint to spruce it up

Carb Kits arrived (just needed the float bowl O-ring gaskets). Carbs are back in the bike now, and I just re-timed the 2 stroke oil pump, hopefully get the pipes and a few other bits back on this afternoon and fire her up. If all is well, ill wrestle with the Airbox to re install that.

I dropped off some body work to my painter yesterday for some touch-ups and I have a local graphics guy duplicating some decals for me . May as well sort everything while im at it.

I wish I could utter that sentence. Painters in this area are delicate flowers, 2 years out and apparently dip everything in gold before painting. Just like the upholsterers.

After we get into the "After-Times" I really need to start pounding the pavement and start creating some relationships

    Oh, good job btw.

Yea, I met my painter when we were both into vintage snowmobiles. When I moved north 10 yrs ago he was now in the next town, so very convenient. He keeps trying to slow down and retire, so I may have to get him to start teaching me a bit.

Ive done a bit of paint work many years ago but those were the days of single stage acrylic enamel and No HVLP guns.

Maybe my next full paint job, Ill do myself at his place under his watchful eye.

I love painting, but I need the best possible outcome so tend to avoid it.

I enjoy it too. If I had a dedicated space I'm confident I could produce some great work. I just don't want to keep putting up plastic and taking it down. Plus, my garage configuration would mean it would always be in the way, regardless of where I decided to do it. And I am technically attached to the house.

I would love to be able to paint in the winter, that's where I have the time. I could get so much more done.

I still do a lot of painting, but it is on a smaller scale with high quality aerosol cans.

Love 2K paint in cans, it’s hard enough to polish in about 2 hours

90 % of the finish is in the prep work, just like detailing

Yeah, that's what I shoot. At the very least the 2K clear over Duplicolor (which I was pleased to find didn't have a reaction).

well, the NS has decided to give me grief.

I have Cyl number 1 and 2 that are not running. Only number 3 is running

Bike was fine before I did the work.

Lots of fuel, even #3 didnt want to fire until I shut the choke off and cracked the throttle, so possible I have some flooding too.

Cyl 1 has weak spark, Cyl 2 no spark. --- I used a spark light on 1 & 2. and couldn't see any light on #2 assuming I had a good ground which im not sure I did.

Cyl 1 and 3 run off one CDI box, Cyl 2 has its own CDI box.

Swapped out CDI #2, still no fire in that cyl.

More trouble shooting to do tomorrow, ill swap out some plugs and see what happens, but if im getting no light pulsing on my tester, im not sure that will help....but process of elimination I guess. Left the plugs out for now, we'll see if that helps dry things out as well.

Does it have Hall sensors the same as the VF, if 3 is running and uses the same CDI, does it use the same coil?

Are the leads in spec for resistance

Just a couple of helper suggestions, cos I have never seen one of these never mind work on one

Well, I finally figured it out. It would have helped if the Honda Factory Shop Manual was correct, but its got a huge error in it. in the ignition section of the manual it refers to the rear vertical cyl as number 3, elsewhere else it refers to it as number 2. Cyl 1 and 3 share a CDI Box, Cyl 2 has its own CDI.

Now going by the ignition section (see pic below), I was perplexed because according to the ignition section the front 2 cyl share Nothing !, when in fact they share a CDI box. once I read else where in the manual that the front 2 cyl are in fact cyl 1 and 3, CDI became the obvious issue. Lucky for me I bought a pile of spares yrs ago when they were available for this very rare bike. You can still find a used CDI but people want $400+ USD + shipping for a set, with no guarantee. Such is the nature of CDI's, good one day and not the next. I had a Suzuki RG250 2 stroke that did something similar, sometimes it ran sometimes no spark. bad CDI.

Be nice to find someone who fixes CDI's, I know there are ways to fix them if you cut out the epoxy in the back and know what diodes or what not to replace. I have 1 spare CDI left for Cyl 1/3 and 2 spares for Cyl 2. Spares for spares is the way I like it with these.

Here she is alive and well again, looking outside you can see why a road test isnt possible now until April or May..

the erroneous page of the manual.....

Good job. I've ran into some HSM errors before, you start questioning your sanity. Well, what little is left.

    Maybe contact this guy

For those loving the 2 stroke smoke and sound. Heres my RZ350, I sold it last yr (probably shouldn't have), Jim Lomas Pipes, ported and polished, it was wicked, went like a rat out of an aqua-duct !

Thanks for sharing the videos, I can just about smell them from here! Made me smile, and Greta Thunberg weep.

I guess with the NS motor there is a logical numbering sequence for the cylinders going from left to right, as they are spaced out along the crank with no shared rod journals, unlike the V4s. Glad you figured that out.

Makes me long for a snomobile again. I love the 2 strokes.

You don't have a track day video on one of them do you?

Just search on YouTube for NS400r

I found one of a track day in Japan, and the CB600RR was not fast enough

Yea there are a few good track day Vid's of the NS400R, eating much bigger bikes for breakfast.

I have never personally been on a track, although I'd love to give it a go.

Maybe once COVID is over ill take a trip to Calabogie or Mosport Park for a day

Here is a young fella, thrashing an NS400R in the 750 class:

Winning at silverstone from 15th on the grid
