I'm 66 in May. Still seem to be able to play a good tune on the gearbox:

Ha, the young people can't afford the insurance now... don't see too many sport bikes around here any more, the insurance is as much as the bike. But the motorcycle sales are down in all areas except dirt and adventure. A lot of smaller 250-300cc bikes out there now for the "newbies". Kinda of a throwback to the 60-70's when most were small, they only got bigger when muscle cars showed up.... oops, showing my age, LOL.
Meanwhile, the Honda V4 enthusiasts are keeping these things alive. Happy to have the VFR classed as a sport tourer, I can't afford the insurance on say an FZ1 or CBR1000.

66 years old, been riding since the age of 12, i had a 85 vf750, and a 87 vf700r, should have kept the 700. i bought a 2003 vfr last year and have been really enjoying being on two wheels again, i tokk a 20 year break. have been performing maintenance this winter and electrical mods in anticipation of the coming riding season. oh yeah, i used to ride and work on triumphs, nortons and bsa. I kinda wish my 2003 had carbs, fuel injection is ok, but the myriad of sensors and electrical jimjabs has a great potential for problems, and why the hell did honda lose the gear driven cams. bog

Good to hear from a few of us wise ones, at an older age , we ride with a lifetime of experience, that comes into play constantly, its still great fun, just not as wild as the younger years, but the feel when you twist the throttle and come out of the corner is still marvelous, it never gets old. i feel we have lost some of the control and rideability with fuel injection, especially at low rpm, what do you guys say?

I think a properly tuned FI bike has better more linear power delivery than carbs. I have had many of both fuel delivery systems, in line4's, V4's, parallel twins, thumpers etc. And if you're changing elevation or changing environmental conditions you can't beat a good FI system. A good dyno tune can give you more even power under a bunch of different conditions.

I'm an FI guy these days, although I can relate to what you're saying about carbs and throttle response. Just my spin but I think FI is better able to adapt over the whole rev range. Still nothing much wrong with carbs once you have them set up and don't let the bike become a garage queen. Ride it!

Talk to me when said FI bike is 30 years old. Just saying, when I have to be dragged into the 21st century I guess I will just have to suck it up and have a dealer work on my scooter.

In some ways a FI bike is easier to deal with than carbs. I can rip apart a carb pretty quick for a cleaning, rebuild or tune. Replacing injectors is not a big deal on most bikes and they are very reliable......... but nothing likes old ethanol fuel! lol

if its injectors its easy, until you have to buy a new one. Have you priced what a new costs? I don't know - Its the rest of the entire system that will bite you in the butt if you want to do your own maintenance and not be married to a computer (which you don't have access to because in most cases each manufacturer uses a proprietary software/hardware) You can count the number of flashes on the dash board and all, but its still not like a modern car (not even close) - Not gona :deadhorse:but the fuel delivery system for my bikes in the FSM is three of four pages, on a modern FI Honda, its over 100 pages. Like the best custom license vanity tag I saw here in your/my state, Ft Lauderdale on a Porsche 911 over 20 years ago, (some things you don't forget) NUFFSED

Turning 71 next week. Been riding since 1964. The VFR is one of my favorite bikes. The last one I had was a 1998 F1 which I sold around 2014. Bought another 1998 Gen 5 in July of 2020. Been slowly sprucing it up to register it for my birthday. IMG_4179[1].JPG

Electronics are now very reliable and make a good bike great. No need to worry.

The FI system isn't all that complicated once you look into it. If you're worried about injectors, take them to a cleaning service and get a flow test report, but normally that would only be necessary on a high miler bike. Use a fuel conditioner once in a while, most contain a good percentage of naptha which is a slower acting solvent that dissolves gums..... use ethanol-free fuel when you can. Same if you have carbs.

sitting here with the cat, cold day in northern michigan, 2 feet of snow out the window, maybe an early spring? Thinking of moving to arizona, i would be riding today................I originally made a comment regarding FI, when i bought my 2003 last year it had a low end just off idle stutter or hiccup, it felt lean and or throttle valve out of adjustment, before i stopped riding last year i had synched the throttle valves and installed a booster plug, the low end miss was better but not gone, so this winter i sent out the fuel injectors for cleaning ,new fuel pressure regulator, new sparkplugs, new air filter, changed oil, changed coolant, new chain and sprocketts, performed most of the electrical mods, which is still in progress. So with all that im hoping to have fixed the low end miss, but it will be another month or two before our snow is gone. bog

Had the same problem with 2003. A Power Commander fixed all the problems below 3K.
