I'm pleased with the way I did mine. volt meter attached to a relay switch attached directly to the battery, switched on/off by a jumper to the rear tail light.

I took it from the switched side of the headlights for 2 reasons.
    1. so it only turns on when the ignition is on.
    2. I don't care so much about battery voltage, i want to know what what the system is supplying the battery.

Mines normally about 14.3 when running. Thats perfect running.. so all I'm using the voltmeter for is a significant difference from that.

thanks for the replies, RM can you give me a quick wiring diagram how you wired your voltmeter, is your relay swirch a separately purchased item? I see your location is the U.P., im over in mackinac county. bog

I ordered an accessory fuse block from wiremybike.com You can probably build one a little cheaper but it's all wired for you and he did a good job. I wired the relay to my license plate light. Ground, power and relay wire, done.

That's how I did mine, easy and works very well. I've compared the readings from a meter attached
directly to the battery, and they're within a tenth or two of a volt.

Needed fast reliable volt/temp meter. made from 2 nodemcu, works via bluetooth :D also programmable fan. Voltmeter from battery. For precise measurement, if you choose fast/simple, take from any place after ignition. But measure with another voltmeter battery voltage when running, and compare voltage, because there will be voltage drop on another wires, you need to know "known good" voltage on that circuit. Like i had on old vfr, i knew the difference, and if voltage dropped below threshold, i knew that there is problem.

The trigger source is the running light tap.
    The device is the voltmeter.

The relay was pulled out of a junk car, I used female spade plugs instead of a socket to make the connections.

I'm in the greater Grand Rapids area, and hoping that this cold night is the last gasp of winter!

I'm the odd man out on this one. (Nothing new on most stuff :).. )
    - I did the relay to the taillight thing first, but didnt care for it.
Then went to a direct to the battery with fuse and switch. I like it because I can check the battery before starting the bike. Batterys good? Yes? Ok, start...
    And the required photo....

Also, there are plenty of threads on a voltmeter install, if you search...

    Beers to all

Best way to do it. Direct to batt through a relay triggered by an ign on source. Direct read on the batt. I originally ran through a VFRNess (gone now) then through a PDM60 fuse system and got readings confused by accessories. Went to relay with inline fuse direct to batt and I have steady 14.6.
