So, just getting the VFR out of winter storage, she didn't want to turn over, even with freshly charged battery, eventually started but making some horrible knocking noises which cleared and then it ran normally? got to the garage and two mice ran out looking rather dazed. Debated whether to investigate......glad I did, air box full of leaves, stank of mice wee, very wet in there, a years worth of mouse wee and sweat, so I'm guessing this interfered with the fuelling causing 'pinking'? which was the knocking, anyway after changing the air filter she seems sweet as a nut, oil and filter next.

Bastages! As long as no holes in the filter material, you're fine, they didn't get into the TB's.
    Next fall, dryer sheets.......

mice commonly invade airboxes and mufflers during long storage. look for acorns and seeds shooting out from the muffler when the engine revs up.

in the worst cases, mouse pee in the airbox can leak down into carbs and cause serious damage since mouse pee is highly acidic, and i've seen it.

All this usually because some Caring neighbour (or yourself) Have a bird feeder in your garden, and overfeed. The surplus on the ground is manna from heaven for the local Rodent population .. And then you provide a nice warm bed for them in your airbox !

Really like this post. Obviously you're of a vintage that had access to the inappropriate-by-today's-standards Herman and Katnip cartoons.
Funny as well since I recently removed a rodent's nest from my daughter's 02 beetle, as part of changing her cabin air filter under the dashboard. They seem to love the insulation for nesting material.
Although I also feed the birds here at home, have a catch and release for rats and mice; peanut butter and corn baited traps. Catch and release -- released into the large plastic bin.
