Hi, I just changed oil and filter om my 2002 VFR 800 (Vtec/no ABS), and now I need to change the friction plates of the clutch... it simply died on me. Do any of you know if I can change the friction plates without changing the completely new oil and filter. I think I once read that it could be done by just placing the bike on the side stand, however I'm not sure it was the VFR??! Cheers for the help Søren, Denmark
Probably so, make sure you have a new gasket for that side of the bike, lean it on the side stand and you should be ok - Just as a preventive measure and prudence, I would have a nice clean pan underneath to catch what ever oil does drain out, and this way you can re-add it to your scooter when the job is complete. So, the clutch just died on you? How? Usually you experience slippage when your going through the gears or on the upper rev range. Could you have mis-diagnosed it as a master cylinder problem (clutch side?) Just asking.
Yes, ridevfr is correct, you can work on the clutch with the clutch cover (right side) removed without losing oil, just lean the bike on its side stand. Could you explain more about the clutch malfunction you're experiencing?
Yeah, I'm curious too, very unusual for a clutch to just "die". Slipping is the usual symptom before complete failure.
Hi thanks for all your replies! When I said died, I actually ment slipped. Sorry! It's my English! The clutch will engage, but when the engine hits approx. 5000 rpm. it slippes. Actually I took the chance today, placed the bike on the sidestand, removed the clutch panel - and practically no oil spilled out! Super! I'll get a new EBC clutch tomorrow (spacers, springs and friction plates). I'll soak the friction plates for 24 hours - and be riding again by Wednesday Evening - Central European time of course. Thanks again, and drive safe! Søren
