I am going on a long road trip and I decided to mount my tank bag to these bars, but I don't know what their purpose is or if it is unwise to do this.

Does anyone know if this would be a good idea or not?

Those are not "bars", they are brake lines! I would try to find a better anchor point.

If you pull the two small bolts between those two brake lines you can lift the tank and maybe run your straps around the front of the frame in that same area.

Yeah, definitely not a good idea.

Any tank bag I have had, had rare earth magnets inside the flaps that go over the sides of the tank. Those magnets alone were far more than sufficient to hold your tank bag in place while riding. I think it would take a total wipe out to dislodge a tank bag held with these magnets. Matter of fact, if you just slap these things on, you do run the risk of denting the tank. Probably 75% or so of my riding was with a like tank back be it commuting to work or several long haul trips. I am confident in just the magnets. But they also came with straps which could be wrapped beneath the tank and through to the other side for added security.

I'm with you on this Randy, I covered 20,000km of bumpy roads on my VTR1000F with a magnet tank bag and it never gave me a moment's concern that it would dislodge. I never put a lot of weight in it, probably 5 kg max.

Place a microfibre towel underneath the tank bag to reduce the marks.

Hmm, not too sure I agree with that. The bottom of the bag is usually a rubberized like surface so it won't slip around at all. I've never noticed
any movement in the magnetic bags I've used. But the towel is going to be slippery and could move some. Any movement with a bit of dust or
dirt in the towel and instant scratches and rub marks. But I'm just speculating, I've not tried it, so I will bow to experience.

I certainly gave the magnet tabs a good looking and wipe as well as the tank before I put mine on. Small grits pf sand and dust can accumulate anywhere, including on those tabs and the surface of your tank. Over the years and the tens of thousands of miles i put on, I only once found scratches, and I knew why. I really dropped the ball once. But the scratches had nothing to do with the magnet area. Something got under the actual bag.
