Anyone know why the difference in specs between years? Is this accurate, 12hp difference in 98-2000 and the 99. I thought the 98 and 99 where the same (no emissions) and the 2000 had the emissions junk. Displacement and torque values are different as well. I'm guessing the HP and Torque #'s vary based on who does the testing? Is there an official source for factory bike specs?

    98
Displacement: 781.00 ccm (47.66 cubic inches)
    Engine type: V4, four-stroke
    Power: 110.00 HP (80.3 kW)) @ 10500 RPM
    Torque: 79.00 Nm (8.1 kgf-m or 58.3 ft.lbs) @ 8500 RPM
    Top speed: 250.0 km/h (155.3 mph)
    Valves per cylinder: 4
    Cooling system: Liquid
    Gearbox: 6-speed
    Transmission type,
    final drive: Chain

    99
Displacement: 781.00 ccm (47.66 cubic inches)
    Engine type: V4, four-stroke
    Power: 98.00 HP (71.5 kW)) @ 10500 RPM
    Torque: 75.00 Nm (7.6 kgf-m or 55.3 ft.lbs) @ 8500 RPM
    Top speed: 231.0 km/h (143.5 mph)
    0-100 km/h (0-62 mph): 3.200 seconds
    60-140 km/h (37-87 mph), highest gear: 12.000 seconds
    Compression: 11.6:1
    Bore x stroke: 72.0 x 48.0 mm (2.8 x 1.9 inches)
    Cooling system: Liquid
    Gearbox: 6-speed
    Transmission type,
    final drive: Chain

    2000
Displacement: 782.00 ccm (47.72 cubic inches)
    Engine type: V4, four-stroke
    Power: 110.00 HP (80.3 kW)) @ 10500 RPM
    Torque: 83.00 Nm (8.5 kgf-m or 61.2 ft.lbs) @ 8750 RPM
    Top speed: 240.0 km/h (149.1 mph)
    Cooling system: Liquid
    Gearbox: 6-speed

First off, where did the info come from? A source could help us add some context.

Maybe 98 and 2000+ are citing crank HP while the 99 is showing at the wheel?

98 and 99 did have emissions crap as far as EVAP and PAIR valves go, but lacked the catalytic converter of 2000+

I'd say the 99 data is 'as tested' by a magazine, where the other two are Honda's quoted data. As far as emmissions "crap" goes, only the catalytic converter would have an impact due to airflow restrictions in the exhaust, PAIR and the evap cannister just add annoying plumbing.

the canister was removed by me like the first thing I did-useless junk, but emission junk actually works ok-I tried all the mods and some make it worse not better. looks like the cat makes the bike lose 3hp-that looks correct. the cat actually helps sometime-built in heater under the seat and it does reduce noise. I run only one mufler

The 5th gen was made 98-01. In 2000 they added o2's, cats, and lost the "choke". You won't see a bit of difference riding those 4 years. Unless your on a yellow one that is, because as everyone knows, yellow is the fastest color :potstir:

    You're dreaming.
When was the last time you saw a yellow racebike win anything major?
That colour just doesn't work as fast as red.
And that is a scientific fact.

Actually those specs are from bikz. Another site gave 105hp for all gen5.

And yes, red is faster. Its also radar and laser invisible. Get your chain blueprinted and shave your valve stems for a few more mph.

I had my 98 dyno tested and it cranked out a massive 98 hp at the rear wheel.

That's a very realistic number for our bikes.

I'll have to find my dyno sheet but I believe mine was all over that number.

What is being questioned is the validity of the "generation" thing that really doesn't hold water. Pretty hard to swallow that an outfit like Honda would not make any major or minor changes in the same motorcycle is beyond questionable.

Is it a hit or a myth?

So the Frenchies got the blue and yellow VFRs? Ok, just a little envious here in the U.S. (Blue wasn't available in the U.S. AFAIK.)
