Hah! I bet you thought I was going to talk about a new pipe and dropping the center stand, etc.

Not so lucky. More than 10 years ago I did an experiment here on VFRW, and I had pretty good success with it.
We had a blog system and I did a program called p90x. I got into really good shape and stayed there for a year or so but eventually succumbed to old habits and gained back more weight.

I have slightly wavered, but have always been overweight since that time. So for over 10 years, I would be classified as "obese" or at best "overweight".

Well, I'm going to try something new. I heard of this silly program called Noom. They kept advertising everywhere so it's likely you have heard of it too. Well, I'm going to account for the journey here and allow people to know what it's like from a male motorcycle rider's perspective.

I weighed in this morning at 242.6. That's one thing the program really stresses is logging your weight and logging your calories.

They stress caloric density and eating food with low caloric density. (prob just easiest to think of those as high water content foods) For example, half cup of grapes has fewer calories than half cup of raisins and you stomach would be just as full from either (at least that's their theory).

What the hell right? Winter is coming on so I was likely to be bored anyway. So far, the only changes to my lifestyle are the app is encouraging me to set water goals and honestly, I have known I need to drink more water for a long time. I already logged my weight so that's no biggie. I have not added any new exercise or changed my eating at all yet. We will see how their psychological approach works with someone like me. Almost 50, been overweight most of my life, and having a short attention span when it comes to 'programs'.

    Can it work?

    Will it work?

    Will I stick with it?

Stick around if you want to see. Scroll to the next thread if you don't. Hey we're easy around here, and I won't be discussing ANY politics in here if I can help it.

(By the way, dropping weight is one of the biggest performance factors you can do for your riding comfort IMO.)

As with all 'diets' they only work if you want them to.
    The real question is:
Are you unhappy with your current weight & what are you prepared to change to obtain the desired weight?

I forgot to mention in the description that they tout themselves as not being a diet. They mention it specifically about 20 times in the starting materials. I should have said that.

Also, for more information the program offers a 14 day trial at which point I will have to make a decision. If I stick with it, I'll be billed $159 and that's was using a promo code for a discount. You pay for a full year at that point whether you complete the 16 weeks period or the full year.

That may affect what people choose for the Poll question of how long I will last. (Right now, seeing the question depends on which of our color chemes you chose for VFRW, but I have a request in for Michael to fix the code so it works with the red/black scheme also.)

I'd suggest making a permanent food intake change, as if you were diagnosed diabetic or Type2 diabetic. Forced change if that happens to you.... DAMHIK.
3600 calories is one pound. If you can cut 500 calories a day, you'll lose one pound per week, and a few months later..... you can do the math....
Not that hard really... I used to weigh 247 and sit at 195 now. Your hip/knee joints will thank you as well.

I would imagine they want to distance themselves from the word "diet" since diets, as such, don't really work. Although I am curious exactly what you get for the money you pay them. And knowing you're paying may actually help, since ignoring them is basically throwing that money away.

the other factor for me is that I knew I'd be bored this winter, and if I put myself on blast here I am more likely to at least give it a college try. I'm really more interested in their psychological aspect as I am a nurse so I am very well versed in diet and nutrition. I want to see if Noom is really different and decide if it's worth the $$. I already follow an intermittent fasting feeding schedule and it doesn't really bother me so my caloric intake is pretty low from food. My high caloric intake comes from booze. I'll be interested to see if it can work for someone like me who enjoys drinking or if it'll try to change my way of thinking about drinking. I'm on day 1 so I'm trying not to have too many opinions going in.

I know how to do traditional diet and exercise and have done well with that. This I am treating like an experiment to see if it really is something new or just more of the same.

Booze is high in calories.... if each drink is ~150 calories, read up on what it takes to burn that off....

The equation is: calories burned = BMR x METs/24 x hour

    For example:
    • A 35-year-old woman who weighs 150 pounds, is 5 feet 5 inches tall (BMR = 1,437), and walks for 60 minutes at 3.0 mph (3.5 METs) will burn 210 calories.
    • A 35-year-old man who weighs 200 pounds, is 5 foot 10 inches (BMR = 1,686), and walks for 60 minutes at 3.0 mph (3.5 METs) for 60 minutes will burn 246 calories.

It’s all about changing lifestyles. We are far more sedentary these days compared to previous generations.

Have a look at second nature program. It’s not too bad.

Having a look at labels, reading the amount of additional carbs/ sugar added to all kinds of food.

I should have added an option to the poll that says "He'll last as long as the free trial, but not commit to the paid portion!" :)

I'm already annoyed at the app. I have almost deleted it 3 times and I'm on Day 3!

Oh, and so far, all I've learned is that beer is my favorite.

It's also my nemesis. Much like Mello mentioned as soon as I get back on the beer the weight comes back. I also get less considerate of my food quality. vicious circle for me...

I have found a new fave here in columbia. It's an IPA and it runs 7.2% so I'm sure the calorie count is up there. It's only around here but my cousin tried it when he visited so I have to buy cases for him when I go down south to visit.

It's called Snapper and has a green snapping turtle on the can. I'll see if I can find an image.

Dude, this message thread went straight to a beer thread in 3 seconds flat! Hehe. The grocery store down the road has a bar and you can drink there. I go there a few times a week because beer is $2.06 for 12 oz pur or $4.12 for pint. Most of us just get it 12 oz at a time because they use the same glass and just don't quite fill it up for $2 so I know we get more than 12oz.

Believe it or not, they had Old Rasputin a few weeks ago. I drank 4 of them and was buzzed as a mofo.

Yesterday they had a double IPA from the same guys that make Snapper. It was 8.X% and it was pretty good also.

There was a couple grocery stores around here that did that too. Pretty decent growler fill prices too. Then a pandemic hit, don't think any of them survived. I think the Wine n' More might have one still, but it's not a convenient location or a decent "pub" feel.

Probably good there aren't any near me. ; - )

I miss bars, but my wallet doesn't.

Finally the Brewery near me started doing breakfast again. That can turn into a 4 hour breakfast with a few games of Cribbage.

My son asked me to do a dry spell with him post Thanksgiving so I'll miss my grocery store drinking days. It definitely wasn't a pub feel, though. I have a local microbrewery that has great food but the beer isn't as good as some of the others I like. It's good, just not great. Here's a link though and you can see it has that right flavor of a pub. https://www.flatbranch.com/
