Carb floats uneven, how do you take measurements?

First post here, newbie to the VFR but not new to bikes.

I just finished cleaning and rebuilding my carbs, trying to set the float height. This is my first time dealing with all plastic floats and I noticed the floats are not sitting even, one side is higher than the other.

Do you try to level the floats and take your 9mm measurement? Or don't level and take the 9mm measurement at the highest float?

If leveling the floats, what/how is the procedure? Heat? How do we know it is going to stay level after?

    Thanks

how far off are they ? use the one that sticks up highest from the carb base as reference.
don't use heat. what year is the bike ?

4th gen floats are not adjustable.

It's a 91. I am used to floats with metal arms that can be bent and level. Some of the floats are not too far off but one of them is off by at least 3 or 4mm. If going by the factory tool or your credit card tool, I guess I will just have to make sure I take the 9mm measurement from the highest side.

very unusual to be that far off. you can try bending with heat or source a new float.

The bike sat for a long time, carbs had thick green goo. I will test run it and probably buy a new set of floats if it is not running well

Is the float valve fully seated in the valve seat?

Yes, everything was ultrasonically cleaned, brushed, sprayed and compressed aired . Float valves are fully seated. Carbs are tilted 45° and floats are uneven. Sitting flat floats are also uneven fully compressed under it's own weight

if you soaked carbs in liquid i'd suggest lubing the throttle shafts so they don't freeze up during inactive periods........

I usually sprayed WD40 after I compressed air-dried the parts. And dipped WD40 as I installed them. I buy my WD40 by the gallon :D

Thanks. It was from Facebook groups. Low miles, garage kept. The only problem is the fuel tank. Completely rusted inside but restorable. Not my first rodeo dealing with rusty gas tanks

The gas cap was seized but I finally got it opened a couple of days ago. I am going to use electrolysis to clean the rust. Bought a used tank for their petcock and fuel level sender.
