I have this new boot to wear which is fashionably enhanced with a set of beautifully crafted aluminum crutches. A fracture fibula and appears some sot tissue injury the left knee, both left side. The second set of x-rays a week after the first shows a movement of about 2 mm, so my doc is sending me to the ortho for consult. I think they will just leave things as is, but maybe CT scan the knee to see what is going on there. Bike has some relatively minor damage and it is in getting fixed right now. A leaking seal on one of the forks. New front tire while I am at it. The rest of the damage is superficial and I doubt it will get fixed. After all, this new bike won't be a garage queen. It is an adventure tour so one should expect scratches and boo boos.

Thanks for asking G. Have you been keeping up with your hiking adventures? You might start a thread where we can showcase our non motorcycle adventures and interests. Then again, I could do that too, with my wood working projects. except I am not good at stopping to take pix as I go. 286422764_347104960895876_6557815133308675190_n.jpg

Aggh - that road looks an evil mess for anyone on two wheels.

Best wishes for a full and fast recovery.

As for the motorbike - an adventure bike is not an "adventure" bike without a few scrapes to show it gets used.

    Take Care

Hey Randy, what a royal pain in the ass. If it had just been damage to the bike... no big deal. Damage to the body..... royal pain in the ass. As you know rehab is the key. Discipline and pain pay off. I hope you heal up quick.

As far as mountain adventures go Randy, I took off last summer. Had my first wake up call.... cancer. Caught it early and I hope in 2 weeks to have a complete clean bill of health. I have broken, torn and smashed a lot of body parts through the years and know how to fix all of that stuff but the big C was a total eye opening experience. And Fing expensive! But I am feeling good and have been training for a trip this August for a North Cascades trip. I don't think I will be in my usual shape for this but I am working on it every day. I think your idea about an adventure thread is a great idea. I should have some new photos and stories soon. Cheers

Wow! A cancer survivor. Fortunately, that is becoming more common these days for the most part due to talented doctors, nurses and researchers. I had a scare with that about 20 or so years ago but it was a false alarm.

I am loosing track of my injuries. Both arms have been broken or fractured. Both feet or leg area twice now. And a multitude of other injuries. Until recently, I always thought my first career was bad for my health. Now I am beginning to understand, I am bad or my health.

Fortunately, we up here are not out of pocket for cancer treatments, except for prescriptions. We must rely on extened health care insurance for that. But the provincial and federal governments are trying to bring in Pharmacare to help people deal with the ever increasing prescribed drugs and their sometimes extreme costs. I know for my diabetic supplies, it costs somewhere around $5K a year if I did not have the insurance.

North Cascades? You talking Washington or up here in Canuckistan? I the latter, let me know. We may be able to meet...on the ground level that is. I have many dates blocked out for medical stuff but will make every effort to meet with you finally.

I'll be in the Mt Baker Wilderness area for the first week then down near Hwy 20 that cuts through the North Cascades for the second week. One hike/scramble will take me within about a mile of the border near American/Canadian peaks. Last time I was out that way and actually in Canada hiking north of Whistler I wanted to ring you and meet up but we lost 2 days dealing with snow. We actually celebrated July 4th in Canada on an overcast day fishing at some remote lake. My son caught 20 trout and I caught 26! My daughter was happy we let them all go, she roots for the fish. lol
I'm not sure if I'll have time, its a full itinerary, might have bitten off more than I can chew. Been training every day getting into mountain shape but having taken off time battling the big C it has been extra hard this year.

All of these stories are pretty funny. Personally I always try to keep the tready side down. Also, although I recently turned 60 this year, I still have not managed to "roll" a vehicle ever. Perhaps I'm just boring.

I grabbed her ass and dropped the bike. I bet that one has not been posted yet. Yesterday went to breakfast on the beach with my girlfriend. On the way home waiting at a light I reached back and grabbed her booty. She leaned to the let telling me something I can't post here and my left foot (in a boot with rather aggressive sole) slipped out. Felt like gravel. Over we went. Just a scuff on the mirror. If I had my hands on the bars it would not have happened.
BUTT what fun would that have been. LOL

Rode the VFR to work today, noticed I did bend the clutch lever a little. I have never had much luck bending back dirt bike levers (always a goos reason to buy foldable levers ). Any tricks to save this lever ? Heat and bend?

I forget where I read this method, but I was able to save a severely bent brake lever doing this. The idea is to anneal the aluminum-ish lever before and between little bends as the bending work hardens the metal. Take it too far and it will snap. Anneal the lever, bend it a little followed by another annealing, bend a little, anneal...

Using a permanent sharpie marker, completely color the bent portion of the lever and a little bit past in the area you'll be heating. Not just a line, fully color the lever all the way around in the area you're working to bend. Aluminum won't glow cherry red when heated and will just start melting when hot enough. The sharpie ink is acting as a temperature indicator. The ink will burn off while being heated and once fully gone is a good indicator the metal is hot enough. So heat the marker colored area evenly with a plumber's torch (MAP gas cylinder fitted to a Turbo Torch. Oxy-acetylene is over kill for this). Obviously you'll want safe positive control of the lever by holding the end with some vise grips or pliers. The sharpie ink will start to burn off and when the last of it seems to be going quickly quench the lever in water. Make sure the lever is cooled, and then you can proceed with a slight bend adjustment. I think I used some wrenches and slipped the lever through the closed box ends and used the wrenches to bend it back. The key is to not get greedy with the bending, just give it a little adjustment. If the lever needs more adjustment, grab the sharpie and color it again. Heat then quench and cool to handle. Small bend adjustment. Repeat until the lever is back to where you like.

This is a photo I took of it once finished in front of the original auction listing.

    NICE WORK

i've used one or two well-placed hammer blows (against the floor or a block of wood) to bring levers back to nearer stock by about 85%, but if you try for more it will likely snap.

mounting lever in a vice can bend it back in some cases.

Still some issues with the knee but it is not really slowing me down much. I am now on my return trip from Cabo on the same bike with Toe and two other Canajuns

I've been lax on reporting my drops, so here is an accounting. I think I'm up to six now Randy.

"84 VF700S Sabre with factory fairing kit:

    * Fall of 1985, at the college that I was attending - backing out of a parking spot - I let it get beyond the point of no return on the left side. Very little damage, and best of all no witnesses.
    * Spring of 1986, out on a date with a girlfriend - turning right in an unlit parking lot at approx 5 mph. I was turning tight enough that the headlight didn't show the sand that was washed across the pavement, and we went down. Scuffed up my knee a bit, the girl friend bounced off of the pavement without a scratch. I had installed engine guards that took the brunt of the damage to the bike.
    * Late Summer of 1986. Met a riding buddy on a favorite local curvy road, he was going the other direction. So, I did a u-turn and was quickly up to speed,......too much speed to make the right hand curve! I went down when after crossing the oncomming lane and reach the gravel shoulder. The bike and I stayed on the sholder, all covered with dust. Time to replace both engine guards and the turn signals on the right side.

    1987 CBR 600F (Hurricane)
    * Fall of 1988. At the end of the work day at the local Honda dealership that was my part time job. I parked the bike on the side stand to run back into the building for some reason that at this point I cannot remember. Came back to the bike to find that it had rolled forward, folding the sidestand and falling on the left side. I had parked it on a down hill slant and did not put it in gear! Most of the damage was to the mirror on that side, and because it was white it wasn't very obvious, so I lived with it.

    Current Ride - 1998 VFR
    * October 2020. Taking a right turn at an intersection, I had not noticed the spilled gravel that was the same color as the pavement until I was on top of it. Going about 15 mph, the front end let loose and down we went. The VFR slid all the way across the two oncoming lanes and blounced up on the quarter-round curb. Somehow, while I was sliding, I popped up to my feet and was in a run, like I had hit second base. Scuffed up knee again for me. The VFR, however, had damage to the right side of the front fairing, the right main fairing, the clutch cover was cracked and scuffed, along with both right pegs, and a bit on the mirror back, the brake lever, and the weight on the end of the right clip-on. I spent January through most of May learning to plastic weld, sand, prime, paint, sand, paint,sand,......... I also had Sebspeed build one of his window clutch covers for me. It all turned out pretty decent.

That brings me up to fout weeks ago.
    * Same 1998 VFR. Avoiding a deer, we went down at about 45mph. A much longer story which I will share in it's own thread, and have linked here.
