    Hello all! I’m new to the motorcycle scene and wanted to get myself into a forum and introduced to some of the folks in the community. My first motorcycle is my grandfather’a 97 VFR 750 Interceptor. When he passed it was handed to my father. With my father having gone through back surgery and uncertain of if he’ll be able to continue riding, he wanted to pass his father’s motorcycle on to me. He stressed that I should start on a smaller CC bike to begin with which I was all for. I took the MSC with Harley-Davidson, and through discussion of my experience, my father feels comfortable passing the bike in to me even without a starter bike as I realize just how easy it is to get carried away, how throttle management is such a huge roll in motorcycle safety and how completely natural it felt being on a motorcycle. (Just about all the guys on my dad’s side of the family we’re bikers) The motorcycle is being hauled to me in two days. It’s sat for 3 years without being started so I’m already anticipating some work. With that said, it’s a pleasure to become one of the VFR community and hope to become accepted as one of the community’s family members. Without further ado, here she is.     Your grandfather's VFR is a great inheritance, as long as you care for it as well as it looks to have been cared for by him.

    I like the checkered flag look in the side fairings, very custom.

    If I were you I would drain every drop of fuel I could out of the bike and fill it with fresh gas BEFORE trying to start it. If you don't, you take a chance of plugging up the carbs with whatever is floating around in the tank. The gas mixes that have been available to us the last many years can go bad in as few as three weeks let alone three years.

    Thank you! Yes, I’ve been doing some research on things to check before turning her over. Clean the tank out, service the clutch, check the brake fluid, plugs, check the jets. I appreciate your feedback. Please by all means if you have other tips and suggestions of things to check I would love to hear all the tips available.
    The checker design is actually the decorative vinyl that you would put in the bottom of kitchen drawers. It threw me off for a while since I was told his bike was some sort of anniversary edition? The more research I did the more it seems like a plain old g4.
    My grandfather also added a trailer hitch, the rear mud guard is now attached via trailer hitch. There was a custom trailer he’d made with arms that’d rest o. The pillion foot pegs for stability though the trailer had fallen apart over the years.

    Grab a flashlight and look in the gas tank for rust. If there is, I've had great results with Evaporust.

    Close the tank petcock and remove the tank from the bike. Drain out the old gas, close petcock again. Get enough Evaporust to completely fill the tank. Fill the tank and let it sit for like 3 days. You can drain the Evaporust back into the original containers and save it for future use.

    Evaporites. Got it. Thanks for the suggestion!
    The petcock would be along the fuel line, correct? Like an “on/off” cut off switch so to say?

    Petcock is a small Valve. Typically on the left hand side of most carbureted bikes. 3 position turn, On/Off/Reserve.

    I would recommend you get a copy of or download the 4th gen service manual. That will give instructions on how to remove the tank. If you don't see any rust though, I wouldn't worry about it. If you do need to do the Evaporust treatment, I would also install a new inline fuel filter. That lives between the tank and carb fuel pump.

    Before you put the tank in service, and after draining out the evaporust you may want to rinse some gas through first. Pour in like half a gallon and just give the tank a good swish. Pour out the gas. Put in another half gallon and repeat. The goal is just trying to get out any residual Evaporust.

    Right on, much appreciated. Picking up an owners manual is on my list though the service manual slipped my mind. Brilliant point on that. My dad just dropped her off about an hour ago along with new filters, chain, and rear tire. I’ll keep the forum updated as progress is made. Thanks a ton for your input!

    Edit: So going through the tank bag, I’ve found that my grandfather still kept the owners manual in the original sleeve. Practically mint. Within it are service interval guides.

    Fuel tap/valve is on/off only, you have to look for it a bit, helps to raise tank @ rear a few cm. Thru bolt is typically easy to remove but fussy to replace, you’ll see when the time comes!
