Best 5th Gen screen to reduce wind buffeting?

Afternoon all,

Just after a few thoughts on the best screen to reduce wind buffeting? My bike came with a large DB, but even with a little clip on screen the wind noise makes rides above 100 miles quite draining....

I'm 5'10 if it makes any odds. As it stands, if I tuck below the screen then it's blissful silence. If I poke my head up, it's just normal wind noise.

Looking at a touring screen, but wanted to hear what people think before I splash out £100 on one.

I think everyone's personal experience will be different on this one. I currently have three bikes, a Yamaha MT-10 which is effectively naked, a 5th gen with a Zero Gravity double bubble, and a ST1300 with stock electrically adjustable screen. I use the same helmet (a Shoei GT-Air) with earplugs with each bike.

The quietest ride is on the MT (but I get a stiff neck after 4-5 hours), the VFR is quite acceptable, the noisiest is the ST (but I am endlessly comfortable).

My conclusion is that a turbulent stream at or just below your helmet causes the noise. A naked bike has little or no wind deflection so the airstream is steady and uninterupted. The ST can be shut up by raising the electric screen to just below eye level which is ok on a motorway but I don't like that much on twisty roads.

From what I've read, I think you're right re. where the turbulent air hits.

Splashing out for a touring screen is a bit of a gamble, in case the air just hits higher up the helmet, so I think I'm just going to invest in some better quality ear plugs for now!

 

I agree as well.

Disclaimer: I ALWAYS wear good earplugs. Regardless of bike, distance or speed. And I wear Arai helmets, which are not the quietest.

My (essentialy) naked Hawk is relatively smooth and "quiet", unless I'm around other vehicles which are disturbing the air. My VFRs aren't necessarily loud or turbulent, but wouldn't consider them quiet. I trimmed a cartoonishly high straight Rifle shield to right below my eye level for longer rides and two up on our ST1100. It is perfect, smooth and quiet. But I also don't really prefer it in sporty corners or slow speed maneuvers. I have a ClearShield Sport that looks killer on the ST and is perfect when I'm in "sport" mode, but it is loud as hell.

 

I rode my 5th gen yesterday for the first time in a few months, and actually do get a bit of buffet from the ZG screen which I did not remember.

 

Another option is the Givi D200, which directs airflow higher on your chest. I added a cheap Chinese deflector which is adjustable. I'm used to sport touring bikes with taller windshields.... this ended up being in-between and works for me.
