molybdenum disulfide grease on bolt threads - ???

    Hi Chaps, reading the shop manual for my CBX750 and it says for re assembly (not there yet) I need to coat the crankcase bolt threads and flanges in molybdenum disulfide grease.

    So...this is new for me, never "lubed" such threads before, I assume its to stop gauling of threads and to get the correct torque (?). but IDK.

    Can one of you with more knowledge and experience than me explain why this is necessary ?

    I have ran into that before, but I can't remember which bike. Guess it doesn't matter. I think your assumed reasoning is correct. I've also learned to do what the FSM says to do.

    In my experience, both with Honda bikes and a variety of car makes, if there's a torque spec and a note to use assembly lube of some sort that means the torque spec is contingent on the presence of the lube.

    Thanks, yea, ill have to go find some of this special grease, the larger case bolts require it for the correct torque

    I certainly know of engines that say to lubricate the threads (and the flanges of the bolts) with engine oil, 2 stroke oil, and moly grease... I'd follow instructions of the FSM.... sometimes they say a specific torque, then tighten an additional 90 or 180 degree angle. Anyway, whatever the good book says.......

    RE: special grease....... it's sold anywhere, just lithium based moly grease that is NLG1 or 2 and it contains ~3% moly. Not to be confused with the old Honda Moly paste that was 60% moly.

    PS - I use moly grease to grease the bearings on my lawn tractor's mower deck.

    As other said: it is a condition for the tightening torque. With the grease you will get something like 2-3 times higher tension force in the bolt compared to unlubricated.
