As my carbs were beyond proper repair, I scored a set of 85 carbs from FleeBay for cheap. I don't think the guy knew what he had because these are almost flawless. My guess they have less then a 1000 miles on them. Most likely came from a newbie crash bike and put up storage. No rust and almost zero corrosion.
When I get mine back from SM I'll replace the jets and see how it goes. Also getting close to finishing electrical wiring . new 85 carbs 3-4.jpg new carbs 1-3.jpg New carbs top.jpg

    Yeah sweet.

But those carbs should be gone thru. The hex head bolts to the plenum are not stock. And it looks like the bolts from the side that hold two carb bodies together may have also been replaced. And the enrichener plungers are way out of synch. Who knows what the real history of those carbs are, but I suspect these have been split.

And yes, you will need 84/85 insulators. Good news is they are way cheaper then 86 units.

Also, the jetting requirements will likely be different as the carbs are bigger, so don't just mirror 86 jetting necessarily. And you would need to reduce the fuel line size down with a fitting and run to the front left carb.

That was my initial race bike setup: 86 engine, 86 tank, 85 carbs gravity fed.

You are very observant Capt but your suspicion about them being split is incorrect. I had already removed the float bowl covers and all jets. The hex bolts you speak of are bolts that I put in to make it easier to remove. It had philips screws in it originally. The carbs all had the same amount of dust and minor corrosion in them. Also all 4 air screw caps were in them. That's unusual IMO. There is no doubt they are all the same. As I mentioned previously in this thread I have a Sigma-6 jet kit in the carbs I sent off to SM. When I get those carbs back I'll install that kit. I told Sigma-6 exactly what I had and what I wanted to do. They provided me with what they thought would work best. It's a starting point anyway. I already have new 84/85 insulators and it sounds like my setup will be like your race bike. :)

after going through adjustments, pokin hole, inspecting, measuring, fitting a replacement S-tube, lubin things, usin a toothbrush, and gettin all bolted together and ready to rock, seems like i cant fit the last snch spring in rear throttle link since a tab between is bent and makes sync adjustment out of range. only about 1mm off, but thats enuff to f'up. could be easily fixed 100% if a synch spring slightly different from honda's could be found and fitted.

rebending that tab to spec without bending something else or its cracking, im leaving to rcthirty's hands.

I'll try yours first as it is to see if I can get it running. If it does I probably try to fix it to make it right. I have plenty of carb parts now.

That float bowl is still leaking SM. I'm going to try the other carbs I have. Wish me luck.

the one float bowl cover was bent, something ive never seen b4, so you replaced it from your spares ? u subsituted another cover, and its still leaking from that one carb ?

unlike my regular practice of leak-testing (with fuel) every carb set ive worked on, the one bent bowl cover prevented testing, and i expected that a replacement cover would be fitted by rc, and all would be fine.

    requires further investigation

There is something seriously wrong with the #1 carb. Before I sent them to you I tried different float bowl covers and yesterday I tried more again. Beats me whatever happened to it. Crash, Run over, sledge hammer , possessed by Satan. Anyway I'm moving on.

Does anybody know where these two brown and green wires go ? They are close to the front main connectors. PXL_20240912_152127309[15126].jpg

Nowhere on a US model. It is a power source for a front running light that some models have for other markets that do not require full headlights during daytime hours. Usually a small bulb in the headlight housing.

It is a great place to tap switched 12V for accessories.

Well I haven't been working on anything for awhile. I ended up in the VA hospital with what I thought was a severe sore throat but it turned out to be a super viral node infection which swelled up my throat and in order to breath they had to do an emergency Tracheostomy. I've been in the hospital for two weeks and finally got out today. I still have another two weeks recovery time and stay on antibiotics until then. The hole in my throat has to heal before I can speak without issue. This was a big one for me and probably the closest to kicking the can other then my racing close calls. I lost 20 pounds and look pretty rough. :gandalf:
