I've been riding motorcycles since I was 15. I'm 73 now. In all the days between those years I've owned at least one, sometimes more, motorcycles. In 2000 I bought my current bike, a yellow VFR. To say I love riding this bike is an understatement of massive proportions. Imagine my horror when the other day I went to go for a ride and my LCD screen was blank. Nada, zippo, baron. An empty face staring back at me. Since I'm blessed mechanically I commenced first reading posts about what could possibly be the problem and how to fix it. Very few of the posts matched what I was seeing on my bike. Time to rip it apart. After very careful inspection I concluded I had voltage and ground everywhere I was supposed to. I couldn't find any problems. I put my baby back together and decided to ride it and worry about it later. When later came I took the cluster apart once more. This time I was going to try and be more thorough. Under the LCD screen is the microcontroller which digests the external inputs and puts it on the LCD screen. I downloaded the pinout for the microcontroller and stared at it for a while. One pin out of the 100 or so pins is labeled RST (reset). I googled how to deal with a microcontroller RST pin and the results came back it needs a low. With the LCD powered up on my bench I put a low on the RST pin, basically just grounded it. Well maybe there is a God, I'm not really sure, but my LCD screen came back to life correct mileage and all. I wouldn't have bet on that in a million years. If you have a similar issue as mine, not water damaged, no LCD screen coming apart, give this a try. Good luck!
Welcome to VFRW Mort. Thanks for sharing your issue and solution! You may want to share the pinout download here by cliking on "upload a file" below the reply box. We are addicted to photos, so use the same button to share one or two of this and previous bikes if you would be so kind.
