Hi all! I plan to buy a VFR in the next weeks, and am torn between 5th and 6th gen models. I used to have a 1989 model in my younger years and it was the best thing (of any kind) I ever owned.
Prices for 5th and 6th gen seem to be quite similar - around $3000-4000 for bikes in reasonable condition here in Pennsylvania and thereabouts, all found on Facebook Marketplace. I haven't ridden one yet since I sold my old one in 2005.
As I see it, obviously very subjective for my tastes:
    Pros 5th gen:
    * Gear driven cams supplying that extra whine which I've loved so much (that's the big one)
    * I like the looks of the front end better
    * No VTEC which most don't seem to like.
    * A bit lighter

    Pros 6th gen:
    * Younger so likely to last longer and more ready supply of parts.

As you can probably tell, I'm heavily leaning towards 5th gen. I plan to have the bike for my remaining biking years (probably around 2 decades) so supply of parts may be an important factor.
    Any input appreciated, thanks!

I've got one of each, a 99 (with Nitron shock and Racetech fork goodness, Sargent seat and raised bars) and a recently acquired 09 (which is stock barring 20mm bar risers). Both have similar mileage (close to 90,000km). TBH I am leaning towards the 6th as my preference, aside from a slight top-heaviness at walking speed I think I prefer the chassis, the VTEC gives it a different character, and I find it smoother and very much quieter at low speed. The GDCs on the 5G are actually pretty loud after a while, and I am sure the main reason for the switch to chains was for noise restrictions.

The VTEC transition isn't bothersome, but the 5G certainly has more linear power, and I can't feel any bottom end benefit when the 6G is in two-valve mode. I have had to replace camchain tensioners when I purchased the 6G. I think the 6G linked brakes are better than the 5G. I prefer the 6G for styling (but mine is very pretty!). Parts will be much easier to acquire for the 6th due to the longer production run. I am confident both will be equally durable if maintained sensibly. At present I am keeping both, but I can see a time when I may condense the herd. I have not yet checked the valve clearance on my 6G; it does appear to be a painful exercise; maybe in the depths of winter this year. IMG_7049.JPG IMG_6956.JPG

Thanks so much Terry for your thoughtful reply!!! Your bikes are real beauties. Wrt sound - for me more (not super loud) is better, the distinct V4 sound is one of the main reasons I'm still so fond of VFRs so that would tip it towards 5th gen. For parts supply - I hear you, that is a serious consideration. Never having worked on old motorcycles, I asked my friend the internet for some advice - this gives me hope in general:

So I'm still / again leaning towards 5th gen. There's a 6th gen not far away though which I may test ride just to see.
Again thanks and keep the rubber side down!

Hello again! So after much deliberation and a handful of VFRs ridden I ended up buying a (drumroll...) 5th gen! As it happens, I rode two 6th gen last weekend, plus a VTR1000 SuperHawk (which had some engine problems). Both VFRs were the earlier years before they changed the VTEC transition. I just found the VTEC transition quite harsh and didn't like the distinct dropoff of torque just before the transition quite bothersome. I also didn't like the absence of the GDC overtones, and the overall looks in person, especially the pointy front-end and all the angular features. Maybe I'm just old...
Enter the three 5th gens I rode yesterday, 98 to 01 models. Well those really made my heart sing! The looks (all of them red), the power delivery, the sound accentuated by the GDC overtones, and the more classic, rounded look all just speak to me. Ended up with a 2001, only 15k miles, Micron exhaust which adds a great growl, and in great condition. Couldn't be happier.

Hi Mello dude, I just purchased a 5th gen as well and after taking my seat off I noticed empty areas and two holes where I think bolts \ screws should go. Any chance your bikes are close to stock and you could take a pic of what and how it should look. Much appreciated.

I'm "with" you regarding the sharp angular lines of the 6th gen. Just a personal prefference.

Good choice, and with only 15,000 miles!
