It turns out that scavenged SV650 flywheel bolts are the exact right size and length to mount number plates to the threaded holes on the underside of the grab handles. The threaded holes I never knew about until you mentioned them in this post! So freakin' convenient those are there... whew. I used some aliexpress "vintage motorcycle plate" jobbers because I couldn't find anything else. Couple L brackets underneath, a lot of loctite... I think they're gonna work. And the look fun.

Thank you again Captain for the grab bar threaded bolt recommendation and picture of your number plate. Gave me the motivation to finally figure this out.



There's a lot of stuff to get prepped. I'm pretty sure I can get away with this 13x9x2in tray as a belly pan. Theoretically it should hold near 3.8L of fluid. Well, before my modifications... But the kicker is that I can still keep the chin fairing on over it. Got the coolant switched over to water + water wetter. New Mobil 1 30micron oil filter. I ended up buying new BT46 tires since mine were 2019 and I was going to need to do it anyway soon. Got the front changed so far. Brakes bled. Had to do a bunch more safety wiring. Bike is running awesome though, so that's good.


I didn't do a great job on the front number plate vinyl. It's good enough for pictures. Just don't look close. You'll know it's #109.

Hah, that's awesome! Those things are pretty thick--should make a good skid plate! Probably matched your normal red liveries too.

I would imagine last place. But I don't really care. I'm not modifying the rearsets or anything to actually make it race-worthy, and I've never seen the track in my life. I just think it'll be fun. I'm curious to see if I can use the same brake markers because the VF weights 140lb more than the Kramer I'll also be racing but going 30mph slower lol.

Unfortunately qualifying for both bikes I'm running is at the same time. I'm probably gonna try to do a bike-swap mid qualifying that should turn into a fun little mess. Anyway, I'll start a separate thread for that once I get a little closer.

 

I didn't realize the Kramer was that light. Must be sick to ride around the track!

291lbs last time on the scale with probably 1gal of fuel in it. It's so nice pushing it around compared to everything else. It feels like a toy. It holds its own in lightweight. It gives up quite a bit of power compared to something like the Aprilia 660 that comes out of the box with over 90hp, but you can roll corners quicker and brake later. It's taking me quite a while to reprogram my brain for it. Still a long ways off from where I want to be, but progress is being made. Last race weekend out on it was the first one I truly felt comfortable on it. Likely in part because I switched to a harder compound front tire.

 

Those 660s are nice! Hard compound produces less flex correct? Little more stability? I dunno, it has been a minute.

idk, I'm not a bike sorcerer. It just turns easier for me, hah. I discovered that I preferred the harder front last year at Daytona last year when I put one on for the endurance race, and the bike felt so much better than in qualifying (soft). Probably just a product of what I like. I'm not really good enough to quantify changes. For all I know it's placebo. I just didn't get around to putting the harder front on until the second round of this year because I'm cheap and the soft still had a race weekend left in it lol.

I was the same way back in the day. I voted for hard front and med rear for our endurance bike. I had to give in on the rear, because they wanted to soft. Cool stuff, I am glad you are still in the mix! Have fun!!

Oh yeah? Track days in the north.. Hmm I wonder if you will run into LE Engineering master suspension guru. Ed Sorbo. He was a great AMA 250cc race winner back in the day. Fast mutha. I have yet to beat him at anything other than holeshots on a dirtbike. hahaha

He is based outta Oregon now, but he said he would be spending time at the Ridge.

 

CBR600rr for new brake lines. Finally have a technique down that works. Probably stolen from Capt. Long flat blade to keep the pads out. Wrecked Woodcraft bar for mounting to the vice and perform the change on a bench. Takes way less time overall and no threat of wrecking paint from overspill.

 

Interesting. So, all you needed to do is replace the brake lines - and this was easier than just replacing them while everything was still on the bike?

 

That was safer. Fucking brake fluid. If the front end easily allows you to re-install a complete bled system, I would do that every damn time. Plus you can easily orient the master with the piston end higher to help release bubbles up thru the bleed hole. And you're standing there with a coldie right there on the bench.

Yeah, I forgot about it completely come sale day. I was going to keep the parts on the side and toss the shock unless someone wants it. I pulled it because it was super rusty.

What Capt said. It was more about bodywork preservation. I was telling my wife I am not sure what it is about a generic CBR600rr but, I just love how clean this one is and how the design was heavily based off of the RC211v.
