VFR 750 FG Rebuild

Hi all, I've just bought an '86 Japanese import RC24. It's been completely disassembled but besides being grubby is in good condition. Could do with some advice on which direction to go with it.
My current plan is to clean up and reassemble the frame first just to get the big bits mobile.
The engine has the top end off and is missing a carb and airbox. I will rebuild it but am considering buying a replacement engine to get it back on the road sooner, unfortunately RC24 engines seem to be rarer and more expensive. As do the carbs.

Questions are -
1- How feasible is mounting an R36 engine? Happy to make up some brackets and spacers but don't want to cut and weld the frame.
2- Are later carbs an option with rejetting and different boots? Or should I keep an eye out for the correct ones?
3- Anything to look out for regarding it being a Japanese model? I'm unsure if or how they were limited, there doesn't appear to be a speed warning light on the dash.

The cascade of issues that will pop up will be never ending. When you solve one, you will create two more.

If this was doable with brackets and spacers, you would have already found a tasty thread or two to read all about it. Could be wrong, but I haven't seen it.

Nearly anything is possible with enough time and money. But if you want to ride your (a) VFR any time in the somewhat near future, find a donor (crashed, untitled, etc) RC24 and build the best bike out of all the parts.

Later carbs are not an easy option either, if possible at all. The same cascade effect will happen.

Or buy a RC36.

 

The only thing I've seen close was somebody that claimed they ARE going to put an RC24 engine in an RC36 frame.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'll keep on with the original then unless an RC24 engine shows up for a good price. I probably would have bought an RC36 but this was so cheap I can spend a fair amount and still come out on top.

Are you located in the UK?

These engines are heavy, so would make more sense to source one as close to you as possible to save on freight.

I'm with Capt 80's....stick with the original engine and carbs, etc. These RC26's are damn nice bikes to own and ride in stock form.

Also, there are several Facebook groups that are for VFR enthusiasts. Some are just for buying and selling. You might consider those as a resource for finding what you need. Parts and also advice and input from fellow Viffers. And there are a LOT of enthusiasts located 'across the pond'.

Yeah I'm in the UK, looking at facebook groups there doesn't seem to be anything around at the moment. Set up some ebay alerts and joined about every group I've seen so expect I'll find something before too long. Plenty to be getting on with until I need an engine in it! Will try and keep this thread updated. Loved the V-Twin in my old Transalp and I've heard nothing but good things about these VFR engines.

 

OK thanks. And FWIW....whenever I am looking for a part - I always ask about it. Surprising how many responses you will get using that method, rather than just waiting to see if the part shows up.

There are parts, parts bikes, and bikes right now - just sitting in people's garages and storage units.

 

If you like the Transalp engine, don't overlook an NT650 as an interim ride. They have some VFR "DNA" and are extremely fun packages.
