Hi, everyone. I hope I'm not duplicating any thread but I was wondering if you can interchange parts for the engine from 6th/8th gen to a 5th gen, since I'm starting to see several codes being discontinued, like the throttle bodies insulators (16211-MBG-000) and the new ones you can find are expensive!! (Or used. These parts, being rubber, I don't want to take that route) but the ones for the 8th gen (16211-MCW-D00) are available and comparatively cheap. Thank you.

    Welcome to VFRWorld, Luis Dhubairt.

My gut instinct is - Honda changed the part number because it is a different part.
But that is only a hunch or a guess.

I would like them to be interchangeable because i may need to replace mine in the future, so I'll watch to see what others may know.

Its been confirmed that 6th gen insulators will fit on a 5th gen... dunno about 8th.
    I bought mine from K & L -- no issues there

Generally, Honda doesn't change the part number when it uses the same part on a subsequent model. There are standard parts on modern bikes which still carry a 1980s part number (but usually not much further back than that).

But sometimes Honda changes the part number when something as insignificant as the part color has changed.

And sometimes, a new part (with a new part number) can still be used on the old model. If you search online at Partzilla you will often see "superseded" part numbers replaced by new part numbers. That's a pretty reliable indication of compatibility, but there are also newer parts which can still fit older models, or can fit with modification. But that is more trial-and-error, from "buy cheap used parts on eBay" experimentation land...

If you want to play this game, too, learn the PCNs. MBG is the 5th gen, MCW is the 6th gen and MJM is (apparently, I just asked Gemini) the PCN for the 8th gen. Which means, of course, that Honda actually re-used the 6th gen throttle body rubber part on the 8th gen.

(Some PCNs can be found here: https://www.vsource.org/VFR-RVF_files/BHondaPCNs.htm)

    Ciao,

Thank you for the welcome. mello dude confirmed they fit. So that's the way to go, I guess. I already bought a set off FleaBay for mine. Regards

Excellent news. 6th and 8th gen share the same part code. Thank you for the confirmation.

thank you for the info. I wanted to compare both old and new parts since where I work (Husqvarna power products) in Mexico, we often see that Husqvarna changes part codes simply because the supplier is different, but the part is exactly the same as before. So I decided to give it a shot and bought a set for a 8th Gen. It cost the same as a single insulator for the 5th Gen. Also: mello dude confirmed they fit so I can rest assured I didn't waste money. Now I'm eyeing the throttle bodies as well, since I had 2 failed injectors in my motorcycle (Bought some refurbished units and not exactly cheap) but the newer ones use "off-the shelf" injectors so they are cheaper as well PLUS the way the injector rails are mounted allow for easier injector service (The holding screws are on top, instead of below like in the 5th gen). Given the 5th gen injectors fit several Honda and Acura cars from that era, I can sell them and with the same money, buy a complete throttle body assembly from a 8th gen. But I spotted some differences between them so I need to study them before screwing up.

You will need to change the pressure regulator. The stock 5th gen regulator limits the pressure at a lower PSI because the injectors have a single larger port, in comparison to the newer injectors that have multiple smaller ports that need a higher PSI.

good point. I guess the throttle bodies from a 6th Gen would be the ones I need, then. Those have the pressure regulator on the rail as well, unlike the 8th Gen, where is part of the fuel filter assembly, inside the tank. Thanks for the advice.

    I didn't know that.

If the 8th gen regualator is in the tank, and the pump and reguator from an 8th gen would bolt into the 5th gen tank, then you could use a newer version of injector sans the inline 5th gen regulator. I have no idea if that is possible, but it gets me thinking.

    Just throwing that out there.

It seems Honda used the same injector in both the 6th and the 8th Gen. the main difference being the fuel rails, due to the regulator relocation. So a 6th Gen throttle bodies assembly should keep your engine up to date. 2008.jpg 2015.jpg
