Since restoring my '88 VFR 750 there has been one consistent problem - that dammed fuel pump.
Shortly after re-commision the bike, I had to replace the original Mitsubishi pump which worked "sometimes."
I found the cheap Chinese crap, paid about AU$35 - and it worked - for a while. Next, I purchased a "better" Chinese fuel pump, AU$150 though a local motorcycle shop, did quite a few km's before it too surrendered from duty.
Went back to the dealer, who happily replaced the unit at no charge. This replacement unit has done the most running before giving up.
I opened the unit up, found those pesky toggle points were not switching, fiddled with it for an hour, trying to adjust it, finally getting it to function properly. The points were just not switching over and the pump would stop; the points were not burned but it did require physical bending of the mounting to get it to work. How is this even possible to get out of adjustment? Must have been wrong from the factory?
Anyway, took it for a test ride, all good (for now) and I have subsequently done perhaps an hour and a half riding without a problem.
But I don't trust the dammed thing! I had previously replaced the fuel shut off relay "just in case" it was contributing to the issue but seriously doubt it had anything to do with it, as in each case it seems to come down to the points in the pump.
Can I just pay "more money" and buy a better pump, if so what "brand" and where from?
I asked AI and it came up with Quantum HFP-181-010, claiming it to be a good choice?
I don't care about to price particularly, just want to purchase a "fit and forget" replacement.
I currently carry a copper "U" bend that I can slip into the fuel line to replace a dead pump when out on a ride but that's BS, and I need to fix this once and for all, yet these replacement pumps I have used so far seem to come from China, not sure who makes the Quantum pump. Any thoughts welcome :)

You want a Mitsubishi pump like it came with. K&L and TourMax both offer one.

The catch is they are straight spigots, not 90 degree, but there are MANY solutions to this posted.

I think Joe @ V4Dreams has posted a good write up regarding this after being burned on shit aftermarket pumps.

I've done multiple versions of 90 degree elbows and relocating the pump slightly.

Thanks Captain! I'm glad you used the "S" word, i've used worse but thought I might get deleted here.
And, yes, have straight spigot on the bike now and have adjusted the mounting position to suit, so no problem with that

Nothing else goes on my bikes. I also search by the model number on that K&L list and find the newest, lowest mile used pumps on eBay that have a return policy. Often I can find units that are WAY younger than my 40 year old pumps and are about 20% of the cost of new. And they usually come with some great formed fuel line and spring clamps for my inventory. And any dud that I have received (1 in about 8 now) they just instantly refund without returning.
