Ok, now that I have realized how new to the vfr scene I really am, I have yet another Newbie question. I have close to 4,000 miles on my VFR and the rear tire is looking a little worn. What would be a competetive, yet cheap replacement? Also, I have planned to get its second oil change, (per the manual) at 4k, I have heard all this sythentic jive and I need a little more info on which is best for my bike. I don't see why if it is so much more beneficial, why Honda does not suggest it. (what kind if I do go synthetic, can I go back, will it last longer??) So, as usual, I expect great answers and advice for the more experienced. Oh...Whats the normal mileage for rear tires?? Will the front last through 2 rears? Thanks again,

Oil choice is probably one of the most debated subjects on any motor vehicle form. Do a search on "oils" or "synthetic oil" and I'm sure you'll have plenty of reading. Tire choice is probably a close second to oil threads. If you don't do a lot of aggressive riding I would recommend a sport/touring tire. As for mileage, same kind of thing, the harder you ride the less miles you get. Personally, my bike came with an extra set of D221's that I'm in the process of wearing out. I think they are just OK and would not recommend them. I'm getting about 5.5K out of the rear and about 8K out of the front tire. For my next set I'll have to see whats on sale when I'm ready to buy. I'd like to try a set of Avon Storms or Conni Road Attacks. Since you asked about oil, I use Rotella Synth and a Pure One Filter. I'm SURE you'll get plenty of responses to choose from.

I have run through 3 conti rears and 2 fronts. Im currently on a BT020 and Im fairly impressed with it. Once I see what total mileage it doesn, I'll decide if I'm gonna change to a full set or just get whatever is on sale. I have really enjoyed contis, though when I'm buyin new.

the kinda rear tire (tyre for the queen's english spellers) you might like depends on your riding style... search on tires and you'll get opinions.... but not nearly as entertaining as the oil threads. See with oil threads you don't have enought empirical evidence to know what the right choice is, so everyone gets to play.

I'm having a great time with my Michelin Pilot Road2's... a dual compound that works great on my commute... when the weather an my schedule cooperate. The engine hasn't complained about the oil....

Not to diss my VFR World stomping grounds, but if you go to VFRD, at the bottom left of the home page you will find a ratings chart that includes just about every tire you could imagine and how the folks who have used them actually rate them. It's a quick and easy way to get an idea of what might be good for you........ My BT020's are way better than I expected as they came as standard equipment on my '06. Will probably go that route again when it's time for some new skins.

Oil and tires ??? That's like discussing religion and politics.
However, the concensus on this site seems to be use synthetic oil and a sport touring tire. As for mileage, most riders get about 1.5 more mileage out of the fronts than the rear. Too bad, as that means you will be changing both at the same time (much preferred) only every other time.

If money is an object when it comes to changing tires you can save some by buying touring oriented tires as opposed to sport oriented. They last alot longer and generally cost less than the latest sport type tires.

I have 3800 miles on the orig Metzeler tires which show very little wear. I guess I'm doing it wrong?
