Swingarm Conversion

Has anyone done a single sided swingarm conversion on their 86 ??. Would the Honda Hawk GT arm work ??:

 

Don't do it man, that bike is a classic...

 

Marley, not doing it to my original bike, however I have a re-builder that I'm considering. Just a little something outside of the box ...:biggrin:

 

Not a second generation, but I did my 1986 VF1000R. Alot of work. Some Japanese site had one like yours with a RC30 Arm, engine.

 

One guy tried it and gave up. That was a VFR800 swingarm he used.

He wound up removing the SSSA and going back to the standard dual swingarm.

 

ive heard of a number of different people who have done this conversion, and to be honest, with as much work and as little benefit as there is in this conversion, im not a giant fan of it and dont ever plan to do this on my own vfr.

benefits include:

it looks cool
pulling the wheel for a tire change is faster and easier.


drawbacks include:
the single side swingarm actually weighs MORE than our stock swingarm
the lower shock mount doesnt line up
not everybody has a tig welder to fix the shock mount
this is NOT a cheap conversion
i dont even know that brake hardware, etc line up as easily as we would hope

if i were to do anything along those lines, id just chrome plate my swingarm and leave well enough alone.

Thanks Tom .... I have never let anyone's opinion change my direction. Plan to start the project this spring, if it works great, if it doesn't what the hell have I lost ??? ..... a few bucks and some time. What have I gained ... a whole shit load of experience and insight......:biggrin:

 

Hi Tom, what front end are you running on your 1000R? I'm thinking of updating my 1000F. I just don't like watching my forks flex quite so much! Kind of entertaining until I remember that it's my butt in the saddle!

 

Those are RC51 forks.

 

Interesting to weigh the 2 items.
I'm guessing original piece weighs 1/3 to 1/2 less than sssa?

Would need shock spring and valving changes too maybe.

 

Yes, 2000-01 forks/wheel/triple/brakes/etc. 1.0kg/mm Eibach springs and 10wt fork oil.

 

You would need to compare the weight of the wheel, swingarm, and the brake setup of both bikes to get a valid comparison since the SSS wheel contains no bearings, they are in the SSS hub, and the brake is connected integrally with the swingarm. I`m sure the Single Sided Swingarm/wheel is the heavier combination, but it`s probably academic anyway since I doubt there are many of us whose butt is calibrated enough to detect that difference, or who ride well enough that it would make any difference.

Use the stock shock for the SSS as a starting point. If it comes from a bike close in weight, it may be a solution.
