Ideas to trim weight off a 6th gen

I have done, or am in the process of doing these things to reduce weight.

1. Leo Vince EvoII Carbon Cans
2. Motad collector eliminating catalytic converter, O2 sensors and associated wiring
3. Removal of PAIR Valve system
4. Removal of Evap System
5. ZG Screen

The last 3 are only a minimal weight savings, but hey, every bit counts. The first 2 are a substantial weight savings and losing the weight of the stock cans gets rid of a lot of weight from up high on the machine. I'm going to weigh the components when I get the Motad back from JetHot and get an actual amount of weight saved number.

The next potential steps can get pretty expensive. I have been looking to find lighter wheels and lighter rotors as a way to save unsprung weight too. If you really are serious you can start weighing tires, but that's a little over the top for a street machine.

Before Nozzle suggests it, putting Helium in the tires will not help, LOL!

 

Fender eliminator, cans, & headers (remove cat), remove passenger pegs, These are the obvious, I'm sure there are more.

 

Personally for me... A diet would be best.

I was talking about the shaving weight on bikes with one of my buds and my wife walked by and said "You know it would be alot cheaper and easier if you just skipped a few of those cheese burgers at lunch." I hate it when shes right.

The Two Brothers M2 V.A.L.E Exhaust Upgrade I did on my 6 gen saved several pounds over stock. I could save even more by pulling off he dummy can, but it just doesn't look right! I've also heard that a Sargent seat could save some weight, but I'm guessing that is over the Corbin and not really over Stock. My stock seat weighs next to nothing.

 

I've heard de-linking the brakes saves 5 lbs. or so. You can also leave the tool kit at home.

 

I just need to go a diet. I'm getting a body by Honeybun.

 

Leathers and other gear is heavy...ride in t-shirt and sandals.

A few more real suggestions for the list:
- Loose the passenger pegs and grab bars
- 520 conversion (chain and sprokets...assuming available for VFR?)
- Lose the bar ends
- Replace bolts w/ Ti or Aluminum kits (where applicable)

Exhaust and wheels probably most significant in terms of weight losses and other benefits. Personally losing weight is probably more productive if its an option. Other than that, i don't think you'll be transforming the bike into a featherweight. A trackday would be better spent time. But to each his own...modding is fun in its own right.

 

lose the centerstand, install smaller battery, replace all larger bolts with ti items. replace lug nuts with ti, toss the license plate mount and light and bolt your plate to the fender, swap to an aluminum (or tubular steel) kickstand, ummmmm...is the front axle already tubular??

 

I would have to say wheels would shave alot off. So far, the only ones i have found are $2500. OUCH! Maybe a group rate for 6th Gen. Militia??? LOL!

 

Trade in for a CBR600RR?


J/K, but VFRs are not known for being light. You'd have to spend CUBIC DOLLARS to get the bike light.

The SSSA is one fairly hefty part, lots of steel on the bike, etc.

To make meaningful weight loss, you'd have to strip most of the street-going equipment, guards, etc, fit lighter wheels, custom carbon bodywork (or none at all), custom aluminum subframe, lose the passenger accomodations, replace all stressed bolts with Ti, non-stressed fasteners with Al, and on and on and on.........

By the end, you'd have spent 5-8 grand and probably still be heavier than a stock 600 supersport bike.

 

Good point... the difference between a 145lb guy on our bikes vs a 250lb guy is going to make a BIG difference.

Being 150 lbs does make a huge difference...I am faster on my VFR than my friend on the same bike...If we swap bikes, (CBR) I am still faster...even though I wish it was the riding skills, we both have figured out, its the 100 lbs difference in our build that makes the most difference...same thing for wheelies...I can power mine up in 2nd gear...mostly due to the weight difference...I guess being skinny does have a few advatages, great for bikes, bad for football.....

 

Our beloved VFR is never going to be svelte! However, I am putting on a set of Leo Vince carbon cans and am considering removing the centerstand. I have never used the centerstand anyway, as I have wheel stands. How much weight do folks suppose that will save?

BTW, I weigh about 170-175 lbs, but even at that I could stand to cut back on the bacon and cheese omelets and chips myself! Of course, my wife loves me as I am . . . .

 

My custom 4gen weighs 76lbs less than my previous vtec's (weighed back to back on the same scale) plus I still kept my centerstand.
